These Boots Were Made For Walking...On Fire

By now you should have heard all about the Belize City Council's hundred day plan - and while they have a lot to accomplish - donating boots to the fire department was not one of them.

So, consider it a bonus that 10 boots valued at about 300 dollars each were handed over today.

The Fire Chief told us every little bit helps:

Col Francis Thomas - Fire Chief
"10 boots are definitely a plus to deficiency that we presently have, and so these boots come just in time. We are presently conducting a multitude of training. Presently, we have an intake - one of 2012 - of about 23 recruits."

"Are the boots of the highest standard or are they, perhaps, maybe bought in Chetumal."

Phillip Willoughby - City Councilor
"These are bought and these are - should be first-world quality-"

"Oh, they are first world, because Chetumal is a -"

"- a first world to support the National Fire Service and these guys are fighting fires. They aren't playing with candles and matches. They are minimizing costs, reducing damages, and getting out there to do the business of firefighting."

The donation is for a total of twenty boots - which were donated to the council from Verne Berne, a fireman from Michigan. He is collecting the other ten boots - and the entire donation will be valued at seven thousand dollars.
