UB Prioritizes Research
posted (April 19, 2012)
And while that's what UB students were doing in Belmopan - in Belize City University Students who are enrolled in UB's Management and Social Sciences programs held their second annual Student Research Conference.

The conference's main objective is to expose students to a broader audience and to encourage their development as young professionals. The research presentations covered a diverse range of topics including: A Cross National Validation of Child Sexual Abuse Predictors, Suicide Ideation Risk and Protective Factors, Investment in BTL, and Belize City Students' Perception of the Accounting Profession. 7news spoke with research conference coordinator Dr. Jean Perriott who told us more.

Dr. Jean Perriott
"Today our students and faculty are presenting research studies that they have conducted. We have two sections; we have the power point presentation where they present their findings, which they have done individually and then we have the session where they have work in groups. That session is really the results of the study that they conducted while they were taking the advance research course."

"Research for some of them started last semester, for some of them this semester. One thing, they have to work extremely hard and be very efficient because most of them have to finish within a semester. We do understand that research would take longer but given the curriculum, the time and of course when the students take an extra course they pay extra money and so we have to remember that too."

"Students in Belize City do not get as many opportunities as our students in Belmopan to listen to speakers and lecturers because of the circumstances that we are in. Therefore an event like this really gets them out because it is something for them and its really displaying their work, although some of us faculty are also presenting, but really it is the students that we are highlighting."

"Our objective today is actually to meet the mission statement of our university and in our faculty it says that we need to look at research in context on the country to display our students research, to give them an experience in a formal setting that they have not had yet so that when they do get to that stage they've already experience it. To prepare them also for further studies so that when they are ready to do their thesis at the masters' level it does not come as a shock to them."

This is the second year for the Research Conference and the University plans to make it a tradition.
