posted (April 20, 2012)
A couple is at the Belize Central Prison tonight after they were arraigned for drug trafficking and drug possession at the Magistrate's Court. Police say that they busted them with 2.4 pounds of marijuana.

According to police, at 8:58 a.m. today, they conducted a search at number 11 Bocotora Street. 35 year-old Shinnette Staine; her boyfriend, 27 year-old Melvin Flowers; and her 14 year-old daughter were all present at the time.

Police say that when they arrived at the house, they saw Staine trying to dispose of a package through the window. They retrieved it and found 1.08 Kilos - or 2.4 pounds - of weed inside; they also found another gram of weed in an ashtray in the house.

As a result, the police charged them with drug trafficking and drug possession.

In court, all the defendants pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charge. Shinette Staine pleaded guilty to the drug possession saying that the police did find the small amount of weed in her house. She added that they refuse to plead guilty to the 2 pounds because, according to her, it wasn't found inside her home.

Magistrate Hettie Mae Stuart then accepted her guilty plea, but Staine's background check showed that she had 9 previous convictions for drug possession. As a result, instead of paying a fine, Magistrate Stuart sentenced her to spend 3 months in prison.

Melvin Flowers and Staine's daughter were granted bail of $6,000, but because of the child's age, Magistrate Stuart released her into the custody of her aunt who was present in court.

Flowers couldn't meet bail and he also owed the court $1,500. As a result, he and Staine were taken to prison this afternoon.
