Corozal Businessman Shot Robber
posted (April 24, 2012)
As we told you earlier, Corozal district has seen a recent spike in burglaries, and as a result, the communities in the town and villages have attempted to come together to form neighborhood watches.

This didn't stop a brazen thief from trying to steal ten thousand dollars' worth of cables and wires from a fledging business, Kuylen's (Quee-Lyn's) Gas Service last week.

Today, we spoke with the owner of the business place. He told us that the same man tried to burglarize the place twice before - and on the third time, the owner's shot him.

Here's what he told us:

Voice of Joshua Kuylen, owner of Kuylen's Gas Service
"I made a report to the police station that a man was in my yard cutting my wires. I fired some shot at the man but he got away."

"On Saturday I took a spin just to see If I see anybody and the same man was in the yard again. I fired two shots in the air and then I went. In the afternoon about 5 o' clock I came again and decide to talk a walk in the orchard at the back of the yard. I saw the man there sitting down behind a tree; he got up and threw a machete at me. I dodge it and then fired two shots at him. The bullet caught him in his hip and exit through his back."

Police searched the premises and found a green bag with 100 pounds of electrical wire, 2 meter heads and one switch box valued at a total of $10,000. A further search led to the detention of 52 year old Roy Luis unemployed Belizean of the Stann Creek District who was seen with two gunshot wounds to the left leg.

Louis is presently in police custody pending charges of theft. Kuylen was questioned by police and later released. No charges are expected to be levied against him.
