It's Education Week
posted (May 16, 2007)

It's Education Week which is being celebrated under the theme "Quality Education for life long learning." And while some may that there isn't much to celebrate with so many children and even their teachers failing the PSE, don't tell that to the Ministry of Education. Today they held an education fair at the Marion Jones Stadium to show that one hundred plus million dollars spent on education annually is worth it.

Keith Swift Reporting,
The Spelling Bee's mascot was the main attraction at today's education fair. Chief Education Officer Maud Hyde and Minister of Education Francis Fonseca say it is annual showcase of the good things about education in Belize.

Hon. Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"This provides us with an opportunity, to showcase the work of the Ministry of Education. Today we are having an open day, so to speak, a fair as they call it, to really showcase all the various units of the Ministry of Education, the work we are doing and how we are going about doing that work."

Maud Hyde, Chief Education Officer
"Its really to showcase what is being delivered by way of education services from the Education Department as well as our stakeholders who have joined with us in providing education services."

And one of those services is school transportation. Students in 36 areas across the country receive free transportation to and from school. Myrna Leslie is the supervisor of the Belize District Center.

Myrna Leslie,
"Everyday, the area that they live, they can board any of these buses. We have special times that they can board these buses to their schools."

But this was a fun and educational fair where some students played chess, a few tried to unscramble this puzzle, while others took the PSE and BJAT - just for the fun of it. Chief Education Officer Hyde says the displays at the fair speak well for the state of education in Belize.

Keith Swift,
What is the state of education in Belize?

Maud Hyde,
"It is difficult to put that in a nutshell but from my point of view I would certainly say it is one of the most exciting times. There are quite a lot of things going on by way of improving the system. I would say that we are at a very good point in education."

Education week culminates on Friday with Teacher's Day in Corozal and an award ceremony for outstanding teachers at the Bliss Center.
