Chessman Gets Off Third Murder Accusation
posted (May 11, 2012)
22 year-old John Chessman Jr., who was charged with double murder of 19 year-old Karen Crawford and 44 year-old Maurice Cadle, was acquitted today in the Supreme Court before Justice Adolph Lucas. This is the second murder trial in which he has walked free.

On May 29, 2008, Crawford and Cadle were killed in Bermudian Landing in what police believed to be the product of drug-related activtities.

One of the witnesses testified that at around 7:30 on that day he was walking home from work when he saw Crawford and Cadle socializing on Cadle's verandah along with another Bermudian Landing resident. That's when a gunman, whose face was not visible, ran from around the house and pointed the gun at them.

The gunman was reportedly looking for Emmerson Wade, Crawford's boyfriend, who wasn't there at the time. According to the witness, he saw the gunman fire a shot which hit he house, and that's when he ran away to try to get help. Minutes later, he heard 3 more gunshots.

During that time, the gunman, who police believed - but couldn't prove - came with 3 accomplices, and one of the men shot Cadle in the left temple area. One of the assailants then shot Crawford in the back of the head, and everybody escaped without any witnesses being able to identify them.

With such little evidence to link Chessman to these 2 murders, the situation already looked as though Chessman would walk once more. Crown Counsels Trienna Young and Stevanni Duncan were only able to call one police officer to testify for the prosecution that Chessman allegedly gave a confession in the form of an oral statement.

This officer told the court that a couple days later they arrested Chessman after information allegedly reached them that Chessman and others got drunk and was telling the story about of how they killed Crawford and Cadle.

The officer said that he got Chessman to divulge in an oral confession about the entire incident that he went with 3 other armed men to quote, "go after a drug dealer", end quote. Chessman allegedly said that they couldn't find who they were looking for, and one of the men then shot Cadle.

Crawford was allegedly supposed to lead them to the drugs, but they didn't get any, and one of the men got "jumpy" and shot her in the back of the head.

Under cross examination, this testifying police officer admitted that he didn't follow procedure to wrote this very important confession down in his personal police notebook, nor the police station's diary. He also didn't read back this alleged oral confession to Chessman and get him to try to sign it.

All this officer did was that he made a note that Chessman said all these things in his personal report and submitted it.

When the prosecution closed its case, Chessman, who was represented by Attorney Tricia Pitts-Anderson, gave a dock statement that he never once gave any statement, and he never gave any confession to anything. He said that he was framed for these two murders.

The jury deliberated for about 4 hours and 14 minutes, but in the end, they came back with 2 verdicts of not guilty.

Chessman was able to walk out of court after almost 4 years on remand. It is important to note that Chessman was charged with Nelson Henry, who was acquitted after the office of the DPP sent withdraw directive due insufficient evidence.

One final important note is that nearly 4 weeks before he was arraigned for this double murder, Chessman had just walked on the 2005 murder of Mara Naomi Garcia, for which he had been charged with his brother Robert Gillett.
