posted (May 14, 2012)
Mercifully, the weekend in the city was peaceful - but still there were brutal murders in Orange Walk and Cayo. We start our coverage in Cayo where a school counselor was viciously stabbed to death.

On Sunday - mother's day, no less - Marco David Thompson was found stabbed to death at the home of his adopted nephew, cyclist Ron Vasquez.

Monica Bodden went to Cayo looking for answers:..

Monica Bodden reporting
It was inside this house that the body of 45 year old Marco David Thompson was discovered by his brother.

He was found around one o 'clock on Sunday afternoon- lying face up in a pool of blood on his living room floor.

He had 3 large stab wounds to his right side of his neck and was found completely nude.

After the crime was committed the killer made his way out through the backdoor - passing several vicious dogs that live inside the same yard.

Thompson was last seen 12 hours before at Blue Angels nightclub in San Ignacio Town - where it is believed that he may have taken someone he had known home with him.

According to San Ignacio Police, they were no signs of forced entry nor robbery - And the murderer may have been familiar with Thompson's home.

But what makes this crime even more disturbing is that Vasquez is a well-known school teacher and is loved by many residents.

So who would want to take this teacher's life and why?

Those are questions still left to figure out.

And while the police are doing their investigation into the homicide - this black bow hangs on the front gate of Sacred Heart College - while the school flag is being flown at half-mast - as the entire school mourns the death of their school teacher - David Thompson - who has been employed at the school for over 25 years.

Dr. Eve Aird - Principal of Sacred Heart College
"He was one of our long serving teachers. He started working here at Sacred Heart College in 1996. He left for a few years and returned in 2008. He was our best English teacher in the country and a highly trained counselor who work with our youths, especially out at risk youths. He did drug and alcohol counseling in the community. He was one of the "stellar" members of the Belize Association of School counsels."

"I am still in shock; I was not only Marco principal, I was also his sister, his friend, we have a very closed net community at Sacred Heart College especially in the staff room. Marco, I would say grew into adulthood and into the professional that he is here at Sacred Heart College as part of a highly trained and close-nit faculty. We were terribly shock, we gathered at school yesterday afternoon to console each other as a staff community and to make plan for our children today because we have to think about the kids too. It's a loss to the entire community and our children are vulnerable. We are vulnerable too, but we have to think about them."

Principal Aird told us the school has been fortunate enough to have other school counselors from various institutions volunteer their time at the school to work along with the students.

Dr. Eve Aird - Principal of Sacred Heart College
"We are very fortunate; we have had counselors from Mount Carmel High School, from Mopan Technical High School, the Ministry of Education sent out Ms. Shepherd, who is a highly trained social work counselor. We have a former teacher and counselor at the high school who has come to spend the day with us. So we had a prayer service at 7:30 this morning, we went to our home rooms, met and talk with the children, help them to process what has happened."

"At 9 o' clock we had whole school prayer service and we have an early dismissal today but we are spending the rest of the day making wreaths and posters remembering Mr. Thompson in the class. Some of our sister schools are sending in counselors throughout the rest of the week to assist us as is necessary."

Thompson was the homeroom teacher of a 2nd form class. This morning his class along with the entire school made posters and wreaths in remembrance of him- who they all will truly miss.

Justin Ford - 2-B Class President
"This morning we are making wreaths for his funeral and earlier we were speaking about what he taught us and he shared with us."

Monica Bodden
"Can you tell me something that you remember most of your teacher?"

Justin Ford - 2-B Class President
"Mr. Thompson was an outgoing teacher, he spoke to everyone, he joked around with everyone and he was very helpful."

Thompson was also the Uncle - through adoption - of cyclist Shane Vasquez.

So far there are no suspects for Thompson's murder but police say they have been interviewing several persons who were the last ones in communication with him.

According to our records, he is the third male found nude and stabbed to death in San Ignacio in the past ten years.
