BGYEAH Says Land Plans Moving Apace
posted (May 31, 2012)
It's been a while since we've heard from BGYEA, the Belize Grassroots Youth Empowerment Association. Well, today President Nigel Petillo gave us an update. He says things at Harmonyville are moving along at a crisp pace, and on Saturday members are being asked to show up at the lands department in Belmopan to get their land papers, signed sealed and delivered.

There are a total of one thousand and forty one acre plots - about 300 of the landowners have received their lease documents and will get their purchase price letters shortly. Another 300 have signed their documents and are awaiting their lease papers while the final third is being asked to come out on Saturday, because if not the train will move on without them. Petillo explained:...

Nigel Petillo, President of BGYEA
"So far about 1/3 of the population at Harmonyville has already receive their lease document in their hand. They have a lease paper that say that piece of one acre is in your name. We are going to the next step to ensure that we get title so that no individual, no foreigner, no government and nobody that come in can take that land from you."

"This Saturday members of Harmonyville are to meet in Belmopan at the lands department where land documents and purchase price and approval letters will be issued out."

"Keep in mind that members of phase one and two who made up about 362 members had already receive their lease documents. However they haven't been able to pay their purchase their price which will eventually lead them to acquire a title for that land. We have great news now, the ministers have called me and inform me that those letters are have already been prepared and as soon as our members receive those documents, the following week they could go in and make their payments towards their title."

"Members of phase 3 and 4 if you haven't made your full payments as far as survey, membership fees and road fees, then we are sorry, we are not going to be giving out those papers because it's over two years now and you have had enough time to make payments. If you were paying $.50 cents a day, you would have made that payment already."

"Apart from that, you have over 5,000 members out of the 6,000 members. Only 1,000 members were able to get a piece of land at Harmonyville. We have identified more land. We have identified about 2500 acres of land just in the vicinity of Harmonyville and we are in the process of dialoguing with the government, this same government. This Prime Minister, who has sought seen, fit to facilitate the grassroots people - to give us a piece of land to expand and develop and be a productive sector of this country. So it's a case of like think not what your government can do for you but what you can do for your government."
