More GSU Busts; This Time On Southside Belize City

And while that was the weekend in Cayo, this morning in the city, the GSU searched an enclosed yard used as a mechanic shop operated by Dane ENRIQUEZ at 10 Caesar Ridge Road. Present at the time of the search were 24 Ryan WELCOME, 22 year old Alexander UNDERWOOD, 23 year old Randy ALLEN, 26 year old Jordean JERGENSON, and 36 year old Derwin MIDDLETON, all employed as labourers with Ministry of Works.

A search on Derwin MIDDLETON led to the discovery of 0.5 grams of cannabis inside his hands. MIDDLETON was arrested and charged with Possession of Controlled Drugs. Alexander UNDERWOOD was found with1 gram of cannabis inside his left front pocket. He also arrested and charged with Possession of Controlled Drugs.

A further search of the yard, where the five persons were standing led to the discovery of two small transparent plastic bags which contained a total of 13 grams of cannabis. As a result, all persons were arrested and jointly charged with Possession of Control Drugs. In a pile of garbage in the same yard a black plastic bag which contained 36 grams of cannabis was found. As a result, all persons were again jointly charged with Possession of Control Drugs.

A search of the back yard, behind the house led to the discovery of another black plastic bag which contained two additional plastic bags. Inside both plastic bags were a total of 211 grams of cannabis. As a result, all five persons were jointly charged with one count of Drug Trafficking. A warrant for the apprehension of Dane ENRIQUEZ has been issued.

They all appeared before Magistrate Hettie Mae Stuart late this evening. They were arraigned jointly for 2 counts of possession of a controlled drug for the 36 grams of cannabis, and the additional 13 grams of cannabis.

They were also arraigned jointly for 1 count of drug trafficking for the 211 grams of cannabis. Both Middleton and Underwood were also arraigned for 1 count each of possession for 0.5 grams and 1 gram of cannabis respectively. They all pleaded not guilty for the joint charges, but Middleton and Underwood pleaded guilty for their single charges of possession. They were all granted bail of $5,000 each, and this matter was adjourned for July 6, but both Middleton and Underwood must return to court tomorrow to face sentencing on the charges to which they pleaded guilty to.

Tonight, all 5 men are in police custody because the office section of the Magistrate's Court was closed before the arraignment session was finished.

They will remain in custody until they meet bail.
