Two Killed In Nightclub Shooting
posted (June 11, 2012)
And four hours after that grenade was thrown - there would be another violent, gang - related event - that would incite even greater public terror.

A stream of shots were fired just as patrons were leaving a popular nightspot name Elements on Princess Margaret Drive at 3:00 on Saturday morning.

Club-goers from Elements and other nearby nightspots scattered in all directions and when the dust cleared, 6 persons were injured: 38 year old Dwight Panton, 23 year old Kenroy Humes, 29 year old Luis Itzab, 33 year old Martin Oluwadare, 24 year old Brandon "Battry" Smith and Bruce Willacey.

The injuries to Humes and Panton were most serious: Humes was shot to the face, arm and back, while Panton was shot to the chest and thing.

Panton died shortly after arriving at the KHMH and Humes died 40 hours later.

Police today discussed the double murder, the wild shooting event - and how they recovered what they believes is the weapon that was used:...

Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood - Police Press Officer
"We do have a Luis Itzab that was injured, Bruce Willacey, a taxi driver, Brandon Smith, he was treated and release from the KHMH and I already referred to the two victims from this shooting incident: Dwight Panton, a 38 yr. old, he is a resident of George Street and Kenroy Humes. We know that Humes is no stranger to the law, he was recently acquitted of murder, he was jointly charged with some other men from that area in Lake Independence. We ended up impounding a taxi where this magazine with the 14 live rounds of ammunition was discovered. We recovered a firearm not too far from the scene that we believe is also in connection with magazine from the vehicle impounded."

"Police have recovered a firearm believe to have been used in connection with that murder; a 40mm Smith and Wesson pistol. We also recovered a magazine containing 14 live rounds of 40mm ammunition. We have 5 persons detained in connection with this incident and we have impounded a taxi believe to have been used in orchestrating of that crime."

ACP Elodio Aragon - Officer in Charge of Eastern Division
"How will we address the issue of the nightclubs, we have seen an increase in instances at basically two nightclubs over the last two weeks."

"I sat with the Mayor and we discuss these issues and one of the support we are getting is that no liquor license extensions will be granted or issued apart from the normal time that these liquor license premises receive. I think this will assist us greatly in curtailing having people out on the street for too long a-time."

And that weapon was recovered in a taxi. According to police, 27 year-old Fermin Matura reported that at around 3 a.m., he was driving his Blue Honda Civic car in the company of 2 women on Newtown Barracks when one of them suddenly requested him to stop. That's when 2 men took advantage and jumped into the vehicle - these are presumably the shooters from the Element shootout. One of the men allegedly then pulled put a firearm, cranked it, and ordered him to drive the vehicle or he will be shot.

Matura told police that fearing for his life, he complied and when the men ordered him to stop on Coney Drive, he seized that opportunity, and he jumped out of leaving the 4 people behind. He said that he then saw the vehicle speed off, and he immediately went to make a police report.

Police recovered vehicle 12 hours later in near the Charles Bartlett Hyde Building, and they detained 23 year old Ian Haylock who seen getting out of the vehicle as he tried to flee.

The police searched him and found 14 live rounds of .40 ammunition. As a result, they charged him with robbery, aggravated assault, and keeping prohibited materials.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges, but due to the nature of the offense, he couldn't be granted bail. Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer remanded him to prison until his next court date, which his set for July 30.

The shootout it seems was triggered by an argument inside the club when members of the Supal street Gang had a confrontation with members of the PIV gang.

One thing led to another - a pint was broken across someone's head - and the gun violence jumped off after that - leaving two men dead.
