Son Of Capital City Slain
posted (September 17, 2012)
There was a homicide in Belmopan over the weekend. A 21 year old was killed as he tried to break up a fight outside a popular nightclub in the Capital city.

It has left his family destroyed because Norval Belisle had never been in trouble - until trouble found him outside a popular nightclub.

Here's the story:...

Rachel Bennett, sister of deceased
"My feelings right now - there is a lot of anger. This family is terribly hurt. What they did to him was cruel - no one deserves to die like that, no one. My brother was peaceful person, a very calm young man and you can ask anyone form this society. Norval has never been in any trouble."

Jules Vasquez reporting
And the peaceable nature is what may have brought an end to Norval Belisle Jr.'s life - as he tried to play peacemaker in a fight, which occurred on the street beside La Cabana Bar early on Saturday morning around 1:00 am.

ASP Sinquest Martinez, Officer Commanding CIB Belmopan
"I would describe that homicide as a senseless act. The reason I say it's a senseless act was that these persons were at a night club - 3 of them went out there, after which they engage in a fight with some guys from Camalote Village and in that there were exchange of blows when one of the person took a bottle - break the bottle on the ground and just find and stab Norval Belisle Jr."

Norval Gilbert Belisle, Sr
"He was not in any fight. He was trying to quill something that started. Our understanding is that he was telling the guy that fighting doesn't make any sense to behave this sort of way and whilst he (Norval) turned was when the other guy stabs him."

Jules Vasquez
"He was playing the role of peacemaker?"

Norval Gilbert Belisle, Sr
"Yes, definitely."

ASP Sinquest Martinez, Officer Commanding CIB Belmopan
"This person got the bottle from somebody and breaks it on the ground and start wielding it and that when he caught Norval Belisle Jr."

Marion Ali, reporter
"So he didn't personally attacked Norval as such?"

ASP Sinquest Martinez, Officer Commanding CIB Belmopan
"Not what I am seeing. Other persons that were along with Norval were being punch and kick at and that's when apparently he went to try to diffuse the situation."

Belisle Jr lived for 12 hours after his throat was slit and finally died at noon on Saturday at the KHMH.

His family from Flowers Street in Belmopan says he was a homely young man - attending UB at night.

They showed us photos of a prized young man.

His father remembers well his only son and youngest child:

Norval Gilbert Belisle, Sr
"Norval is a student at UB and he is a kind and loving person. He doesn't talk much and he loves sports. Basketball is his main thing. Every day you can find him on the basketball court. My son was a cool and easy guy. At that age you can't just keep him in because he is not a person to any dance. He is not even a dance person. It probably is that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time."

And police say they want to make sure no other innocent person gets caught in such a place again:

ASP Sinquest Martinez, Officer Commanding CIB Belmopan
"We have gotten in touch with the City Council, we will meet with the liquor license board and I believe some just action will be taken - the good will be suffering for the bad because what we are noticing for the past three weeks after these establishments have been close that's when you have all these altercations and involve only youth or minors between the ages of 17-24. We have something is plan and when we meet with the liquor licensing board this week some people won't like the idea what direction we are going."

But there is no consoling this family which has lost a precious life:

Rachel Bennett, sister of deceased
"Norval never have a wife, he never had kids. Our little girls and sons will never know their uncle. They will never have that special person in their life. We were fortunate enough to know him for 21 years. He was the baby and we will never ever forget him."

Police have one person detained - a 28 year old from Roaring Creek. It turns out this person is a distant relative of the deceased. The club owner Mike Menjivar told other media that the persons in the fight never entered his nightclub - but hung out on the corner street. He says he will be stepping up security to prevent a recurrence.
