posted (October 4, 2012)
Tonight, a Corozal family is still shaken up by a home invasion which took place in Chunox Village. It happened at around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, when 3 armed Hispanic men attacked them just as they arrived home.

Today, Police Press Officer, Raphael Martinez, briefed the media about the incident, including the most recent development in the investigation, which led them to believe that the assailants may be Mexican policemen.

Here's what he told us:

Raphael Martinez - Police Press Officer
"Darlene Cabral, 25 years old housewife of the same village, Chunox village in the Corozal District reported that approximately 7 o' clock on the 2nd October upon arriving home with her husband and her children she notice that her house was being ransacked and immediately thereafter she was accosted by a Hispanic male person who brandished a 9mm firearm at her and proceeded to tie her up. At the same time she heard shots firing and she saw her husband running."

"The two other Hispanic male joined and proceeded to rob her of cell phones amounting to about $2,260.00 and of course $1,500.00 in cash and they made good their escape using her husband's vehicle which is a Chevrolet 4 door double cab vehicle valued at $18,000.00. The total value of items stolen came up to $21,760.00."

"I was recently informed by Corozal police that they have recovered both cell phones so far and one is still missing. The amount of money has not been recovered as yet but the vehicle has been recovered and they also impounded a white 1997 Nissan car that was believe to be a part of this entire process used by Mexican nationals. Two Mexican nationals have been detained. Both of them are believed to be police officers."

Late this evening, 7News contacted Corozal Police who told us that since this morning, they only suspected that these men were police officers. Police now have it confirmed that the 2 men detained by police currently, are members of the police department, particularly a formation in Chetumal.

Corozal police have since been in contact with the commanding officer of that formation, and all relevant information has been relayed to help Belizean Police.

According to information from their Mexican counterpart one of the detained men is a senior police officer who has 17 years of service under his belt, while the other man is has been serving for 3 years.

The third suspect, who is still at large, has been described by his commander as a rogue police officer, who is known for illicit activities such as drug seizures with no reports or logs to indicate his movements. He was also absent from duty for several weeks. All three of these men were spotted in Corozal Town, and when Belizean police officers made a move on them, the rogue officer was able to escape.

The Chetumal police has pledged support to Belize police in an effort to detain this third officer.

Corozal police say that they only have an identification parade which they need to do, and after that, charges will be laid.
