Alicia Pott's Pain
posted (October 22, 2012)
On Friday night, we told you the story of a 30 year old mother who delivered a baby boy by C-Section on October second, and then ended up spending most of the next three weeks in the hospital - some of it in intensive care - after the caesarean delivery went terribly wrong at the Northern Regional Hospital.

Indeed, she nearly died, and in the process both her womb and ovaries were removed, meaning this mother of two can't have any more children.

On Friday, we withheld her name at the request of her family, but tonight, she is speaking out about the series of mishaps and what she believes is malpractice that has her still in the hospital tonight.

She spoke to the media from her bed in a private facility in Orange Walk after being transferred from the Northern Regional Hospitalization where she had been going through her second hospitalization.

She is still recovering and today discussed the pain of her losing her ability to bear children:..

"This means obviously that you won't be able to have any more kids. What's your thoughts on that?"

Alicia Pott, Mother in Medical Distress
"Well that's the point right now because three days ago I was in the hospital again. From the time my baby was born I haven't seen my baby yet. I was at home when they discharge me from Belize City and I had to come back to the hospital because I had too much pain and 3 days ago I came out from the hospital and they at the hospital told me that I still have my ovaries, its only my womb they had remove."

"My husband and I not satisfying with that met with brothers who told us that we should get a second opinion. That's how we reach here. Now that they checked me they say that how I don't have the ovaries - I don't have the womb and I don't have the ovaries. That's how I ended up here."

"But you are better now?"

Alicia Pott, Mother in Medical Distress
"Yes, right now I am getting better."

"You are the one who went through this entire situation - you won't be able to have any more children. What is it that you want to see done with this situation that has affected you?"

Alicia Pott, Mother in Medical Distress
"This not only affected me, this has affected me and my husband and my 7 year old daughter. I haven't seen her in about a month or the baby. I think this has to stop because it's not only me; there are many more women out there. I can't explain the feelings I have towards those people because the day they took me to stay at that hospital - I just cried because I don't want to go back there. I can't sleep, I feel like I am not the same person like first. I can't care for my baby like I am supposed to. I have to depend on other people. I can't do anything. I think they have to stop this."

"If someone else is in the situation too I just hope that they have strength to come out and talk the truth for them to stop doing this."

Edward Gilroy Garnett, Husband
"All we could have done is pray. I have never prayed this many times yet in my life. Even in school - I never prayed this many times. People who are out there has to realize that prayers is everything and thank God she is still living. I don't know for how long because these are things that got us complicated at this time because she could be good right now but tomorrow may be something else."

The Ministry of Health has said that it will not comment because they expect that a lawsuit may be in the making - or in other words, they are covering themselves - which - in an editorial aside, we feel obliged to note, is hardly an appropriate confidence building response from a public health authority that is under serious scrutiny from a public that wants answers not obfuscation.
