Indian Interns Pull Disappearing Act
posted (October 25, 2012)
Tonight, bosses at the Archives and Records Service in Belmopan are scratching their head after three Indian University students who came to Belize for an internship have disappeared without a trace.

Amandeep Singh Brar, Parminder Singh and Gurmukh Singh arrived in Belize on Sunday afternoon for a one-week internship at the Archives Department.

They were supposedly transfer students from the Archives and Information Studies programme at the Dr. Hari Singh Gour University in India. A person identifying himself as the Director of International Training had made the arrangements for them. It seemed legit - until they showed up for work on Monday and appeared clueless. Now, usually internships are for those already in a field of study, but these students told the folks at Archives that they were just beginning their studies.

They went through the first day like that and were dropped back to the Bullfrog hotel by Archives Department Staff. And that was the last anyone saw of them. When Archives staff went to pick them up the next morning, they were gone - only leaving behind these two suitcases.

There are no signs of foul play and investigators believe that the trio has most likely headed north - in the hopes of making it into the United states. They believe that they only used the Archives Department internship as a front to get a visa to Belize from where they can hopefully be smuggled into the United States.

By now, it's an old ruse - primarily Asians using all kinds of stories to get some official cover for a Belize Visa - and that's the last anyone has seen of them. They have come as students, interns and even film-makers.

Director for The Belize Archives and Record Service, Herman Byrd, told us that they went in with good intentions. He says he will learn from it and doesn't plan to take on any more interns.
