posted (October 31, 2012)
Yesterday, 7News told you that Wesley College was celebrating its Red Ribbon Week, which has become a part of its tradition in the fight against teenage drug use.

Today, they held a parade which ended off at the school's compound, and immediately after that, the entire school participated in a rally, in which the students displayed skits and dramas around the theme of the fact of drugs in their everyday lives.

7News stopped by and had a chance to speak with a few of the students. Here's what they told about their perception of the availability and use of drugs in their communities:

Shanique Wade - Wesley College Student
"In our community, a lot of people do drugs, but I myself don't do drugs because I found out that drugs aren't something good to do."

Tanisha Flowers - Wesley College Student
"This drug free rally is portraying that you aren't supposed to use drugs and that drugs can cause you to die from liver cancer, and other different parts of the body getting damage."

Daniel Ortiz
"And what has this drug rally been like for you?"

Tanisha Flowers
"It has been a good thing my step-father uses drugs, and I have tried to tell him stop the smoking, that's his choice."

Daniel Ortiz
"And you personally have tried to stay away from the influences."

Tanisha Flowers
"Yes, I don't socialize with any friends who try to influence me to try the bad things because I am a cool girl."

Daniel Ortiz
"But, you do recognize that young people are the ones who are targeted the most by drug dealers. They are the ones who the dealers try to sell it to the most."

Tanisha Flowers
"They are the ones who sell the drugs, not who they sell it to. These are the ones who sell the drugs themselves."

Daniel Ortiz
"So, you know personally of people who sell drugs who are young people."

Tanisha Flowers
"Yes, Dickie Bradley said, 'Don't call any names.'"

Kay Jay Holliday - Wesley College Student
In my neighborhood, it's not easy to access drugs, but in the Martins area where my aunt lives, They are always complaining about that and people who smoke weed around them. They are trying to tell them that drugs aren't good for them, and it can affect them in many ways, especially if they don't know about it."

Daniel Ortiz
"Is it easy for young people to access drugs?"

Andrew Munnings - Wesley College
"Well, to tell you the truth, yes, it is. You can just go around the corner give this, you get back that, and smoke it. There are young kids from 5 years and 6 years on the street have access to it."
