Mexican Carried Major Weapons At the Free Zone

Tonight, 22 year-old Zurisaday Villasenor Mendez, a Mexican from Quintana Roo, is at the Belize Central Prison after he was busted with a frightening stash of weapons near the Corozal Free Zone.

Police strongly believe that he was some kind of drug trafficker or assassin, because of the weaponry and gadgets that he was found with.

On Tuesday, at around 11:20 a.m., acting on intelligence gathered by Corozal Police, a joint operation of security forces descended on rooms #102, and 103 of the Las Vegas Hotel, which is near to the Santa Elena Border.

Mendes was found inside room #103 along with 1 black Glock .40 mm pistol, which contained 14 live rounds of ammunition; a black and grey Ruger brand 9mm pistol, which was loaded with 16 live rounds of Aguila brand ammunition; a silver and black magazine which contained 10 live rounds of 9mm ammunition; a transparent plastic bag which contained 28 grams of suspected cocaine; a zip lock plastic bag containing of 2 grams of suspected cannabis; a transparent plastic bag containing 7 grams of suspected cannabis; an assortment of radio communication devices; antennas; cell phones; a green face-mask; and 2 pieces of jewelry.

Inside room #102, police found an assortment of food supplies, clothing, alcoholic beverages, documents and luggage. From both rooms the officers found keys to several vehicles which included a Mazda car, a Chevrolet double cab pick-up, a red Ford 250 pick-up - which were missing license plates - and a double cab Ford Pick-up with a license plate, all of which were parked on the hotel's compound.

The security officers searched the vehicle with the license plate, and they discovered a brown and black AK-47, which was loaded with 30 live rounds of 7.62 mm live rounds; another brown and black AK-47, which was loaded with 26 live rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition; a brown and black G-Cherokee brand 9mm pistol with 16 live rounds; a black 9mm magazine, with 16 live rounds; another magazine with 10 live rounds; 2 more magazines which were both empty; and a Colt Super .38 Auto brand pistol, all found behind the passenger seat of the vehicle.

The officers continued their search, and inside a garbage bin behind the hotel, they discovered a Colt Super Auto. Pistol, which was loaded with 6 rounds of .38 ammunition.

So, altogether, that's a total of 7 guns, 12 magazines and 144 bullets - enough to outfit a small army! Police arrested and charged Mendez with 1 count of keeping a prohibited firearm, 2 counts of keeping prohibited ammunition, 3 counts of keeping an unlicensed firearm, 4 counts of keeping unlicensed ammunition, 5 counts of drug trafficking, and 6 counts of possession of controlled drugs.

He was arraigned yesterday in the Corozal Magistrate's Court, and he was remanded to prison until November 29, his next court date. Corozal Police are actively making efforts to contact their Mexican counterparts via Interpol to try to ascertain if Mendez is a known drug operative.
