Salima Barrow's Learning Philanthropy With Lemon
posted (November 2, 2012)
They say when life gives you lemons you make lemonade, and that's just what Salima Barrow is doing.

She is the Prime Minister's 7 year old daughter whose mother as you know is fighting breast cancer. And seeing her mother suffering inspired Salima to do something to help children who are caught up in the same struggle. So she is having a one day lemonade sale with a little bit of help from Bowen and Bowen Crystal Juice.

On Sunday she and her classmates will set up their lemonade stall in BTL park offering both Crystal juices and a hand-squeezed, homemade variety of good old fashioned lemonade.

We found them at home today turning those lemons into lemonade, and staging a press conference that would make her father proud.

"First Haley will say something and then me and Abigale and then Gianna."

Hayley Thurton
"We are doing the limeade stand to raise money for the kids with cancer."

Monica Bodden
"Whose idea was it? Was it yours Salima?"

Salima Barrow
"Yes it was my idea. From when I was little I wanted to do a limeade stand."

Monica Bodden
"You are actually going to use the money from the stand to do what?"

Salima Barrow
"To give to the kids with cancer because we want to help them, we want to support them."

Monica Bodden
"Why is that? you have a reason?"

Salima Barrow
"Yes because my mom has cancer and it will be much worse if little kids have cancer too."

Monica Bodden
"How did your friends get on board with the idea? You ask them if they wanted to help out?"

Salima Barrow
"Yes I asked them if they wanted to help."

Monica Bodden
"What did you say when Salima ask you if you wanted to be a part of this?"

Abigale Thurton
"I say that I wanted to help."

Monica Bodden
"You wanted to?"

Abigale Thurton
"Yes."

Monica Bodden
"How about you Gianna?"

Gianna Saldivar
"I said that I wanted to help them and help to help the children with cancer."

Monica Bodden
"I could only imagine it's going to be a lot of work squeezing all those limes. How do you guys plan to actually have everything ready for Sunday?"

Hayley Thurton
"Today."

Monica Bodden
"Today you all are going to squeeze the lime for Sunday?"

Hayley Thurton
"Yes."

Monica Bodden
"You think you are going to be up all night squeezing lime?"

Hayley Thurton
"Yes."

Monica Bodden
"How was it squeezing them, hard, was it a lot of work?"

All Replied
[It's easy for me]. [me too], [it's kind of hard]

Monica Bodden
"You guys told all your friends to come out on Sunday and support you?"

Salima Barrow
"Yes we did."

Monica Bodden
"What will the price a limeade juice?"

Hayley Thurton
"One is $1 and another is $2 and a different one is still $1."

Monica Bodden
"Will there be other of your friends out there helping out?"

Salima Barrow
"Yes."

Monica Bodden
"You guys are going to be out there all day?"

Salima Barrow
"Yes."

Salima and her friends will be at the BTL Park from 3 in the afternoon to 6 in the evening selling homemade and Crystal Limeade as well as other treats.

The proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to the Children's Wing of the Belize Cancer Center - a project spearheaded by Kim Barrow.
