Pomona Peacemaker Killed
posted (November 20, 2012)
Over the long weekend, there were 2 murders: one in Belize City and one in the Stann Creek District, near the heart of the Garifuna Settlement Day Celebrations.

We start by reporting on the stabbing death of 26 year-old Karim Peters in the quiet village of Pomona.

By all indications to 7News, his assailant attacked him in retaliation because he was trying to part a fight. It's an all-too-familiar-situation where alcohol got mixed in with heightened emotions, which resulted in a tragedy. We found out more when we went down South yesterday:

Daniel Ortiz reporting
Yesterday, residents of the quiet village of Pomona were shocked by the sudden loss of 26 year-old Karim "Bo" Peters, a well liked individual and community activist.

When 7 News caught up with the family of Peters yesterday, they were raw with grief, on a day that should have been a time of celebration became a time of mourning.

It is believed that his relative stabbed him to death in retaliation for preventing a fight. The blood spot on the ground is a reminder to family that he was fatally stabbed near the assailant's home.

Andrea Peters - Cousin of the Deceased
"They were hanging out at a river bash yesterday in the village. It was very strange that something like that transpired yesterday and apparently Karim tried to stop a fight between the two brothers. He is known not to like violence and he would prefer that things end off in a loving manner and I understand that is when the person came back and stab him on his bicycle."

According to his family members, Stevens was a kind man.

"Karim was a very loving person, honestly I knew him like he was my brother because practically I basically live here with Karim and Corona. Karim was somebody that I could depend on, he was somebody that everybody in the community could depend on. I do not know Karim to be a violent person - he is always helpful, it doesn't matter on any race, creed or color - he could be in that pick up and he sees people walking down the road and he could be filled to capacity and he would still stop for you."

For Andrea Stevens, the incident has caused her to have mixed emotions about the entire situation because both the accused and the deceased are her very close relatives.

Andrea Peters
"It's very traumatic for us, for me especially because I don't know which side to lean on. It's hard for me because honestly both guys are my family."

She also believes that this tragedy was the result of a larger problem in the village.

Andrea Peters
"I think personally that the bar in the front has a lot to do with ruining families here in the community because I think that the bar needs to be upgraded as a membership club. You go and sit and behave yourself and then people sit down and drink and have fun inside. I think that stringent laws need to make in the community when it comes to drinking because if you notice the bar is situated right around where civilians live."

Karim Peters was the common law husband of the village chairlady, Corona Villafranco, who is also a former PUP Senator. He was also an organizer and referee of several recent sporting tournaments in the village.

Police say that they have detained Peter's alleged assailant, but no charges have been laid as yet.
