"Gang Boys" Killed The Wrong Man
posted (November 26, 2012)
And less than three hours after that murder - there was another just a few miles away - at the other end of Faber's Road in the Yabra area.

In this case it was no execution - just a random and indiscriminate shooting launched by young men caught up in a gnag rivalry. But the victim was not one of their rivals, he as a 48 year old who just made the mistake of stepping out of his house at the wrong minute.

In a community in the middle of a gang war, just stepping out proved fatal on Friday night. Jules Vasquez spoke to his sister:..

Jules Vasquez reporting
Today a small mound of stones cover the bloodstain where 48 year old Deon Waight was killed. On Friday night, he was walking to the store right around the corner from his home when he was shot in the head.

His sister - who lives beside him -had a sense of foreboding when she saw a car coming up the street:

Betty Bradley - Sister of Murder Victim
"I came down to close my gate and I saw a vehicle coming up the street but I thought it was police, so I just stand up at the gate because I didn't want to pull the gate. Right now how the police are operating - if they see someone run in they would try to come in after you. I stand up there thinking it was the police but when the vehicle pass me I conscious that it was not the police. I didn't see the person in the vehicle but I saw the back of the vehicle and the color of the vehicle. I just put down my head and I lock my gate. The second time I lock my gate I heard bam, bam, bam. I got frightened and I drop to the ground and I ran upstairs to my house and I was so frightening and trembling because I have my nephew out here, but then I heard a young man yelled it was Deon which is my brother's name. I ran out and hollered 'oh my God,' my brother was lying on the ground. He is a man that doesn't mess with anybody."

Indeed, Deon Waight lived in his own world as his family describes it - he'd been shot 20 years ago and often didn't know the time of day or the day of the month.

Harmless and clueless to the point as he jumped out of his window to go to the corner store, death was stalking him:

Betty Bradley - Sister of Murder Victim
"It seems like on that night anybody that was on the street was going to get it. "

And the man who did get it had no involvement in anyone's war:

Betty Bradley - Sister of Murder Victim
"All I want to say to those little young men out there is that they have to stop this thing because they are killing innocent people. That person that killed my brother - when they went around that lane they could have seen that he is a man with big dread, a little man "bongo," he does not do gangbang. That's the part that really hurts me because I stand up right here and saw my brother looked back at me. You are a cold blooded killer. The same way you killed my brother, someone might kill you out there the same way. We are love, we are not into violence and we are not into retaliation and those things, so right now we put everything in God's hand for my brother. "

Police recovered three shells from the scene and have no suspects at this time.
