Why Farrakhan Still Matters
posted (December 3, 2012)
Last week, we told you about the visit of Nation of Islam Leader Minister Louis Farrakhan who arrives in Belize on Thursday December sixth for a 4 day tour.

We've been only able to give you a broad outline of his schedule while here in Belize, today, the main organizer of the event, Nuri Muhammad, spoke to us on the details.

Farrakhan arrives on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 - after which he will have a press conference, and then go to meet Prime Minister Dean Barrow at his Belize City Office. That night, Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington will host him at a formal reception.

On Saturday, he begins to make his public appearances starting on the KREM WUB morning talk show followed by a number of addresses. Muhammed explained:

"Then he moves later on that day to the mosque, the Muslim place of prayer on Central American Boulevard where he will address the Muslim community. Later that afternoon at about 2pm he will be at the King's Room at the Princess Hotel where there is an expected large crowd of youth organized by the Department of Youth Services."

"The following morning he will go to central prison in Hattieville manage by the Kolbe Foundation where he will speak to the entire inmate population and then his last talk that same Saturday night will be his return to Bird's Isle - the third time that he is going to Bird's Isle which he is looking forward to that because he has fun memories of his first time at Bird's Isle 37 years ago."

"When this tour came up that he was travelling in the region anyway - he ensured that Belize would have been a part of his itinerary."

And while the Bird's Isle Address has historic value - as we also showed you last week, there is a whole generation of young adults who have no idea who Minister Farrakhan is.

Muhammad also spoke to us on the importance of his visit in that context:

"It would be because the message of Minister Farrakhan I think is appropriate for this time on a number of levels. One is that we are a society at this time perhaps you could say in crisis for a number of reasons. I think the sense of hope and the sense of optimism has been dulled by circumstances facing us from the top to the bottom. We are challenge, so if we can bring in a voice that is inspirational, not a voice to cover the problem, not a voice even to blame but Minister Farrakhan's unique message is that while he explains environmentally the factors causing the problems he does not shy away from the need to take personal responsibility. I think while he will be explaining the social and economic issues affecting us in Belize and in this region he certainly will not get away from the fact that the only way to change it is for you to dig within yourself and to pull up your own sense of purpose."

"I think he also speaks a message of unity. Jules, I am sure you from your perspective see how much divisiveness and the tactics of divisiveness that is used in our society."

Farrakhan is on a six-nation Caribbean Tour and he will come to Belize from the Bahamas.
