Arrests for New Years Night Shootings
posted (January 4, 2013)
It's been 3 days since the murder of 45 year-old Orlando Williams, and the near fatal shooting of 48 year-old Marco Valle, who continues on life support tonight. Yesterday, we told you about the GSU who labeled it as a deliberate act by affiliates of the George Street Gang.

Well, the news tonight is that 2 brothers, 23-year-old Akeem Humes and 20-year-old Shakeem Baizer, have been charged for the shootings, and are on remand tonight.

But their families are angry because according to them, they have airtight alibis which can be verified. His sister called us out to the courthouse after their arraignment to vent her family's discontent. Here's how she defended them, under our questioning:

Tracey Baizar - sister of men accused
"Honestly I just think that they are abstracting them really and truly because me personally - they were at home with me. Akeem Humes was at 8 miles with my mom at a dinner having fun. Shakeem Humes was at home with my uncle drinking. We all were in the yard waiting for them to come home. When we heard the shot I ran out, I know that Akeem was at 8 miles and Shakeem was home. It didn't worry us but the police I think have a personal thing on my family - on my mother. My mother works with the police department and they just abstracting them. Akeem Humes was already detained for 11 months at Hattieville for a murder case and he came off that, there was no evidence. Now it's a second one again and the same thing will happen - they will come off because they are innocent. I personally know - I was there and I know they were. The police are not doing their investigation properly. They need to sit down and look over things and find who is doing this. I sympathized with the family. The man that got shot lived down Dean Street on the canal side. We said hi, hello, good morning, good afternoon - no reason for them Akeem Humes to go and kill that man out of what. I am not saying that my brothers they are good. I would never stay here and say that my brothers are good because everybody knows them. But this time I know and the time that Akeem Humes was there was at the prison for murder - the both of them didn't do it. I am standing here saying that they didn't."

"But at the same time too police must have a reason why they believe that your brothers are connected. It is often that they don't revealed these details to us the outsiders, the civilians and there is obviously is a reason why they believe that your brothers are involved in these things."

Tracey Baizar - sister of men accused
"Honestly I don't know what to say. I know personally they have a personal thing on my mother's family - on those boys. It's not one or two times. My little brother got shot on Dean and Euphrates Streets. They came and pick him out of his bed yesterday - he couldn't even walk and the GSU will look at my brother and tell him that because he saw us coming in he pretends that he cannot walk well. They took him out of his bed, limping to go at the station for what - an ID parade and he was in his bed. They took 4 of my mother's son - 4 of them. My little brother who got shot - the police didn't even come to take a statement from him. He is still there waiting for them to come take a statement from him but as soon as they say go and detain Mrs. Baizar's kids they come, so it's a personal things, honestly I think it's a personal thing."

Today, Akeem Humes was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith on the single charge of murder for Orlando Williams homicide. Due to the nature of the offence, he was remanded to prison until February 15, 2013.

In the interview, you heard his sister refer to him being acquitted of murder. She was referring to the August 2011 case where the charge was withdrawn against Ryan Alvarez and him for the shooting death Jason Flores. The prosecution could not proceed because of a lack of evidence.

And his brother, Shakeem Baizar known as "Bap" was arraigned before Magistrate Cayetano on the charges of attempted murder, dangerous harm, and use of deadly means of harm. He was also remanded to prison until February 15. That is for the shooting of Carlos Valle. It is important to note that Baizar's brother 17 year old Shakedi was shot 3 weeks ago. In his Facebook profile picture - he describes himself as "Gaza Shatta" - a reference to the George Street Gang.

Also of very significant note, that Shakeem Humes was released on New Year's Eve, the day before Marco Valle was shot. That bail was for an interesting offence: he was charged with causing public terror for that now infamous shooting incident at the BTL Park Fest. Younger brother Shakedi Baizar was then shot the night after the parkfest shooting.
