Behind the Gaza Door
posted (January 18, 2013)
This morning - after 10 days - the barriers locking off three blocks of Dean Street were removed. But we can't say life has returned to normal - after this community was rocked by the mass murder of four well-known area residents. Yesterday, for the first time residents were allowed to re-open the upper floor of the building that was the scene of those murders. They called 7news to see what they found. Monica Bodden was there and she has this report on some interesting observations:..

Monica Bodden reporting
It was through this backdoor that the killers allegedly made their way inside the George Street men's apartment complex.

If you look closely, the lock on the bolt for the grill door is broken many say it has been for a while now before the incident. This makes it impossible to securely lock the door. In fact, anyone familiar with the door - knows that it can be easily manipulated with just a pinky finger to slide open. Neighbors say this is a fact that police who often search the premises - should be familiar with.

The police told the PM the door was not forced open.

Hon. Dean Barrow, January 8, 2013
"Mr. Dawson will tell you that when the police went on the scene they photographed the premises, they photographed the back door and that there is no question of that back door having been forced open - there is no question of any padlock having been broken off the back door."

As we made our way inside the entrance, we noticed the first spatter of bloodstains almost directly in front of the backdoor - Residents say it was here that the body of Albert Long John Fuentes lay lifeless in a pool of blood. The streak of blood-stained fingermarks on the wall near to where his body was found- tells a story of some sort of struggle he might have endured while fighting for his life.

To the right down the corridor is room number 9- the room of Gerald Shiny Tillett-the alleged George Street Boss- who was not there at the time.

Inside his room was where the body of Leonard Ghost Meyers was found seated in an upward position in this couch. Those who saw his body described it as being in a relaxed pose - almost as if he was set in that position by his killer. The lock on his room door was broken in - Apart from the bloodstains on the couch in the room, there was this one small spot of blood under his room window.

If you look just above the spot of blood, you'll notice the window louvers are bent - this suggests to area residents who have visited the scene that Meyers may have heard the commotion in the hallway and may have tried to force an opening to get out.

Room number eight, right next to Meyer's room- belonged to Anthony "Heads" Perez. He was found at the entrance of his room door. There was streak of blood which suggests that his body was dragged through the hallway.

There were bloodstains on the floor on both sides of the door. The locks on his room door were also broken. Now we move along to the other side of the apartment - as you can see there are boot prints all over the bathroom floor.

This set of booth print in the corridor leads you to this room door - which also have print marks on the door itself - which suggests that someone kicked it opened.

The lock on this door was broken as well. Across from this room was room number 4 -Keino Quallo's room. His room door was also damaged. The door on room number 7 was clearly broken in - the nails ripped out of the wooden frame.

And while we were told that there was no forced entry - one may argue that maybe it was the police who damaged the doors in the process of their investigation - We are no crime scene investigators but the community's reaction to this is -wouldn't these doors already have been opened if the men were found dead inside their rooms?

But while George street residents are still trying to comprehend what went on in that apartment building on January 8th - what they do know is that many items were stolen from these rooms - including television sets and stereos - even under heavy police guard.

There was more from that area this evening, as residents - including prominent members of the George Street Gang - organized a candle-light procession for peace. That just finished a short while ago - and we'll have the story later on in our news.
