San Ignacio Cabbie Dies In City Collision
posted (February 27, 2013)
Yesterday morning, 37 year old San Ignacio Taxi Driver George David Moro left home as he always does on Tuesday's to bring a merchant to the city. He usually returns in the evening but not last night. Moro was killed in a violent collision in front of CISCO Construction at mile 3 on the Western Highway. IT happened at 7:30 and 7news was on the scene shortly after:

Jules Vasquez Reporting

When we arrived on the scene the driver of one of the cars, 31 year old Mexican Diplomat Marco Antonio Lopez Leon was being taken in an ambulance

But there was no ambulance for the driver of the other car, 37 year old George David Moro.

He was crushed behind the wheel and died.

Lascelle Arnold who lives in Belmopan was one of the first persons on the scene:

Lascelle Arnold - Came Upon Accident
"He was breathing when we arrived there. We opened the door, and he was still alive, breathing. Apparently, he was all the way underneath the dashboard. The seat snapped back completely."

Jules Vasquez
"How long was it before the taxi driver expired?"

Lascelle Arnold
"I would say about - when I arrived there and opened the door, he was still alive. When the ambulance came he was still alive. By the time the started to get stuff out of the ambulance, when we went back to the car, he was gone."

Jules Vasquez
"Did he say anything during this time?"

Lascelle Arnold
"Nothing, he was unconscious, but he was breathing very hard, heavily, but by the time we got out the equipment and got back to the car, he was gone."

Moro's Chevy Prism with Benque Plates had collided head on with a Nissan Cruiser which carried Mexican diplomatic plates.

Lascelle Arnold
"They had a little girl - I don't know her age - 3 females, and a diplmat, I think from Mexico in the read car."

Jules Vasquez
"What was their condition?"

Lascelle Arnold
"One the girls, I don't know if she was driving, but her mouth, apparently her teeth go knocked. I don't know if they broke up, but her entire face was covered in blood. The other one, the daughter had major back pain, and another girl from Belmopan, her leg, she had some serious pain one of her legs."

Reports say that Moro drove into the lane of the Mexican Cruiser

Lascelle Arnold
"He was on the wrong side of the road, apparently, he wanted to turn into that feeder road going in, and from what we understand - because we had another car that was behind him - when he turned on the wrong side to get off the road, the next car saw him coming into the lane and tried to turn on the other side. He apparently realize that they were going to collide, and he turned back. The other guy turned back, and that's when they slammed into one another. It was tough."

A tough scene and it took an hour and a half to clear. Moro's body was removed from the scene an hour after the accident.

With the cooperation and heavy equipment from nearby CISCO construction, it was arranged for a front end loader to cart away the Prizm. Then they cleaned up the mess and lifted away the Cruiser giving way to blocked traffic that extended for miles

Lascelle Arnold
"As Belizeans, I think we should all get trained in this type of emergency because the ambulance will not be on the scene when an accident, but if people who are trained, making sure that they don't move people too quickly, it would help a lot."

Those in the area say it appeared Moro was turning into Tapir Bar and Hotel - which would have meant a left turn across the lane of oncoming traffic.

All five persons in the Mexican Diplomats car received minor, non-life threatening injuries. Three were released last night and two this morning.
