Newly Named City Streets
posted (March 7, 2013)
And while that will be a year two decision, the City is still busy self-congratulating for its first year in office.

Today, they held a Street naming award ceremony where 58 Belizeans were honored by having their names used as street names in Belize City. The Mayor explained the importance of recognizing these members of the public for their commitment to public service.

Darrell Bradley - Mayor, Belize City Council
"What we chose to do, marking our 1 year anniversary, was to recognize certain people who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of Belize City. Previously, the City Council has recognized teachers. So, we have chosen to recognize persons in the various arts. We chose to recognized historical figures, trade unionists, and persons in the various sports areas. We chose to recognized wives of the former Prime Ministers and also the wife of our current Prime Minister. I believe the 3 of them have made significant contributions to the advancement of Belize City in the area of community service. We recognized persons like the late Beverly Smith Lopez, the late Edison Coleman - people who really distinguished themselves in the area of public service, in their chosen field and who really made a mark on a chosen society. Of note is that we recognized 2 young persons in Belize. 1 of them is Rowan Garell, and I think that he himself, through his short life, made a significant accomplishment and mark on his community and in Belize City."

The ceremony lasted for a little over 2 hours after which, there was an unveiling of a Belize City map which showed where these newly named streets are located. The first to be honored was Governor General, Sir Colville Young.
