An Easter Monday Murder
posted (April 2, 2013)
And while there was a lot to celebrate this weekend, and a lot of churching to do - regrettably, the violence didn't stop.

Two people were killed while three others were shot. The only killing in the city happened last night at 7:30 where a 28 year old was murdered in an area between two warring gangs. Michael Heusner was walking on Mahogany Street towards Mopan Street when two men on separate bicycles rode up from behind and one of them opened fire.

Heusner received multiple gunshot wounds to his head and body and died on the spot. Neighbors heard at least 7 shots ring out.. According to Heusner's family, he had just left his mother's house on Courtney Crescent only 5 minutes before he was murdered.

His friends strongly believe that he was murdered just because he was on wrong turf. Heusner grew up in the area known as Back-A-Town and he was killed just across the canal that separates it from the other gang territory known as May Flower or Ghost Town. 7news was on the scene and today Monica Bodden spoke to a friend of the deceased who asked to appear off camera:

Voice of: Friend of Michael Heusner
"I saw him around 8 o'clock last night. He and I were at my sister's house, and the last thing he told me is to let us go buy a flask of brandy and 1 dollar cigarette. But at that time, I had fish that I was trying to sell, so I told him I felt a vibe, and that I don't really want to go around there. What happened was that a friend of mine came to tell me that gun men are rolling around, but when I reached back here, I sold my cousin the fish. Soon after, I heard so many gun shots but my nephew was on the bridge, and I said, 'My homeboy went around there.' When I reach around there I saw my homeboy on his face; he had so much gun shots. I saw him on his face, they shot him in the back of his head,. they chanced him out of his life too because the young boy doesn't get into problem. The young boy has a little daughter; that's 2. I know the young boy from the time his daughter was born, he behaved himself. He stopped giving trouble, and went to go make his money out at the Cayes with his father."

Monica Bodden
"Do you think that he was the intended target or if anyone from this particular area was around that zone that they would have been shot as well?"

Voice of: Friend of Michael Heusner
"That's true; that's the only thing I know."

Monica Bodden
"So you don't think he was the target anybody from this area would have gotten shot if they were around?"

Voice of: Friend of Michael Heusner
"That's the only thing I can say because it was me, and the ones from MayFlower who always have beef in that kind of way. So, I feel it's one of those same young men from there that chance my friend out of his life. I told him to hold it down, what you are going to do around there, we don't have any gun. I just felt a vibe and I told him that I'm not going around there because like me, when they told me, gunmen are around ,I said what I will do around there but me and Mickey are straight homeboys. We're friends from we're small. I grew up with him like a brother to me. We go to Caye together, we sell - do our fishing together. We make our money to just try keep out of trouble and not to bother anybody. I would really want justice for his death because he didn't have to die like that, to go in like that so young. He is 28 years old, I really feel hurt because he is a good friend of mine - a close friend of mine. It would have been me and him but I said I felt a bad vibe, and I said I'm not going around there, because one of my homeboy told me watch yourself gun man is circling about. What am I going to do around there?"

Heusner was a fisherman by trade and the father of a 2 year old child. Police retrieved six 40 caliber S&W expended shells from the scene.
