Men Claim Cruel And Unusual Punishment From Police
posted (April 3, 2013)
Today two young men from Belize City came forward and told the media about extreme police harassment they endured at the hands of police in Independence over the Easter Weekend.

Their story of cruel and unusual punishment seems to come out of some oppressive regime in a faraway country, but they say it happened right in Independence Village where they were passing the Easter until they were picked up on Saturday. Here's what 19 year old Adrian Daniels told us off camera:

"I told the man I'm just going to go buy a soft drink; the man stabbed me 2 times with the gun by my side and kicked me on my leg and told me shut up. He said, "You don't hear to shut up, at that time I fell when he kicked me on my leg. They started telling us to take off our particulars because they will arrest us, but they never told us what they will arrest us for, a few minutes after when they took down everybody name, the man said that he will arrest us for PI. Now, we're locked down from Saturday afternoon. Monday morning when we were to get released, our 48 hours were up, and before that they took us out the morning and start to profile us. Another officer came in with some tie strap; the tie strap that they use to tie hub cap and that sort, he came and told us to get down, now when we got up the man told us to put out our hand, when we put out our hand he started to put the tie strap on our hand and start tighten it. When they took off with us, I thought they were going to take us home but they never did took us home by the areas where - by where we're staying. When they took off, they flew pass Kendal Bridge, and I told him "now boy they will really hurt us now.' Then they continue drive; continue drive, until they nearly reach by Hopkins junction. They stop by an area where a bulldozer was digging. They stopped, now the same officer that they picked up by the Chinese shop jumped out, when he jumped out he looked at me and this young man and asked him, 'Which one of you is going in the hole?' He said, "Since you like ask effing questions, just jump the eff out and get in the hole'. When he got in the hole, the officer moved from the hole and walked towards the pickup truck, the men jumped back in the vehicle and they took me about half mile more up."

"Yeah, we're separate now when they took me. So the man told me to jump out; the same officer that jumped out first and told him jump in the hole, came out again and told me to jump out and start run. When I started to run I looked back, then continue run, then looked back a second time the officer pulled out a 38. Now, when he pulled out the 38, he point it at me an d fired 3 shots at me "bang, bang, bang". I start check myself to see if I got shot; when I conscious that I didn't get shot, I continue running back more. When I continue run back more, now when they left I start walk come out, when I nearly reached by the hole by him, I saw just his white shirt in the hole and he was slouched down in the hole. When I yelled for him, he jumped up and looked at me and I told him to come closer. I asked where the men went; he said that they went straight up that way. When he told me they went straight up that way, I asked him, "What did they tell you?' He said they told him to stay in the hole and by the time they come back he should still be in the hole. If they come back and not find him in there, it will be a different thing."

Fortunately the police never found them back in the area, they dodged their way out, back to the highway where, they hitched a ride and got back to safety. The pair have made a report to the police internal affairs office.
