There was a murder and attempted murder in Roaring Creek Village in the Cayo District last night. It started with the robbery of Hyde's Meat and Grocery Shop – and ended with one man dead and another critical. Monica Bodden spoke to the surviving victim today

Monica Bodden reporting
Just 30 minutes before close time last night - Hyde's Meat and Grocery Shop in Roaring Creek was held up by an armed robber. The attack played out in less than 5 minutes but when it was over, one man was injured and his brother - the owner of the store was dead.

The incident happened around 7:30 last night .

The gunman entered the store wearing a ski mask and carrying a firearm. He approached the cashier and demanded money. And shortly after, things turned deadly.

Voice of Liani Mehiea - Common-law Wife Randolph Hyde
"I was serving some children and they had just sold me their pint bottles so I was paying them. It happened so fast,I was in a shock. A person with a long sweater with a hood came in and he had on a black ski mask. He was in front of the counter and he said to me 'Give me all you have'. He had a silver gun in my face. He came behind the counter and stopped 1 yard in front of me and he put the gun in my face. He started surveying the area to check if any money was around. I only had some small monies - some $5 and $2 bills. He grabbed them while his gun was still in my face. When I saw he grabbed the money out of the box, Mr. Randolph Hyde said - 'What is going on at the front?' As I heard his voice, the gun was moved from my face. The man fired a shot to the back where meats are sold because that is where they were."

42 year old Randolph Hyde and his brother 36 year old Mark Hyde were at the back of the store when the gunman entered. When Randolph heard the commotion at the front, he attempted to peep and then shout at the gunman who in return fired a single shot in his direction. The trigger man then made his way to the back of the store where the two brothers were hiding behind a counter.

Mark Hyde - Shooting Victim
"I was at my brother's shop last night because I took over for one of my family members that went on a two-week vacation. So I decided to take over on Monday. I worked good on Monday but Tuesday, which is yesterday [April 16th,2013] I went to clean the Saw at 7:30. As I took the top part from the saw I heard my brother said 'Boy'. When he said 'Boy', the guy shot from all the way in the front of the store. When he saw that we were hiding he shot my brother three times. I grabbed the slider from the saw and I placed that in front of myself. The male individual shot me two times. One went into my shoulder and the other went into the 'thinin'. So I stoned him with the articles that I had in my hand. He then shot me in my back. I saw he managed to run outside when I fell then I saw behind me because I fell by the door at the store room but I managed to yell for help but my sister-in-law was on the phone. No one wanted to come in and help. A lot of people came in after that and I told them to take me to the hospital and they were still looking at me on the ground. God protected me because I could have died."

Voice of Liani Mehiea
"When he reached at the back of the store I heard five or six more gunshots, one after the other. When the guy ran out I ran at the back because I was concerned about Randolph Hyde. Before I got back there I saw Mark Hyde was moving around, wiggling on the ground. So I looked in the store room to check if Randolph Hyde was on the ground. I didn't see him. When I looked in the other direction I saw him on the ground in a folding position in a pool of blood and he wasn't moving. I touched him and started talking to him and he didn't respond. I ran to the front and I dialed 911 and I told them what happened. I ran at the back and I touched him and started talking to him. He became unconscious. He started to gasp for air but through his mouth and the blood was on the ground was bubbling up."

The gunman escaped into this open lot across the street.

Randolph Hyde was shot over his right eye and one to his chest while Mark Hyde was shot to his upper left chest and upper left back. At 8:15 last night, Randolph Hyde passed away while undergoing treatment at the Western Regional Hospital. Today his common-law- wife told us, they were getting threats as early as last week.

Voice of Liani Mehiea
"No, they don't come to the shop and threaten us. We hear rumors that they wanted to do us something. We didn't really think that people would bother us like that. That is why when the man reached with the gun in my face; I was so shocked - I couldn't do anything."

So far the family cannot say if anything was stolen from the store. Randolph's common-law wife did mention to us that he had a roll of money in his pocket at the time he was murdered- that money is now missing.

And today Mark Hyde considers himself a lucky man to be alive.

Mark Hyde
"The slider from the saw helped me. I feel like that is what helped me or I would be right where my brother is right now. I just put it in God's hand that he won't get away with that because if I knew exactly who he was. I don't recognize the man too well but he has a resemblance to the same person that went to take a chicken truck last week. I feel like if I see this man and I really watch him then I will be able to figure out if it is him or not. I would want this culprit to be caught because these men are over doing it. I don't think this is right. Everyone with a business establishment should be able to get a Licensed Fire arm to protect themselves because of the things that are happening now."

Police have no suspects at this time but are following up some leads.
