Deon Wants To Make A Difference
posted (May 9, 2013)
The Third World Social Club is a three week summer camp that has been around for 13 years. The grass roots camp is organized by football star Deon Flowers in the Lake Independence area and caters for over 250 underprivileged youths from across the city.

But it is not easy keeping it going – according to Flowers it's him against the world in terms of sponsorship. To make the annual camp possible this year, he is hosting a 2 day bar-b-que sale next week and a football marathon fund raising drive. Here's how you can support.

Deon Flowers – Third World Sports in Education
"The camp is coming up and we're looking at what all we have, we want to do it on the correct date because we dont want to go through any hassle running back and forth while the camp is on. We want to get everything together so right now we are raising funds and next week Friday and Saturday we're having a bar-b-q sale to raise funds to reach a budget that we have. We are catering for 200 and add kids but the amount of kids that come we don't want to chase any of them away. We want to work with this kids and every year it's the same thing that we go through but definitely I will always fight for it because it is something we are doing to help out the community and every where else. We have invited a lot of different teams already because the football you need to be under 14 years of age and the basket ball is going to be adults like us because we want everyone to have fun. We're going to have checkerds, domino and we're trying to get prizes for football and basketball. We have other games because if a lof of people come out then we have these games and they can stay active. Not only kids enjoy these activities because even as adults we enjoy it also so the same way we will enjoy it, we want the kids to enjoy also too. This is what i'm trying to reach out to the people - that we need to work together. It's a lot of things we are trying to do and to be honest we have a budget we will need help with things and we will need help with money. Money will allow us to go back and forth to get the stuff and when we travel and up and down it's a lot of thing on our shoulders. On the football field we had to tie up the goal post - it needs to be welled and it is dangerous for the kids because some kids don't know better and they start shaking it. We need a net for the rim and the rim is cracked also. There are some people that like to show off like if they are Lebron James and Michael Jordan - they want to dunk on the rim and that is the enjoyment of the game, just as is seen on tv we can do in Belize because we have talent. People are abusing our talent - I've been trying to reach out for 13 years and everything I do is legit. I work hard and the only thing we are getting out of this is that the kids feel good and want to be like Lebron James and so on."

"Tell me about the bar-b-q sale that you said will be next week Friday and Saturday. Where will this bar-b-q sale be held and how can people get tickets and so forth?"

Deon Flowers
"Well usually I have tickets or you can call me 607-8785. Friday we will be selling on this street from Partridge street to Vernon street by 'squeeze'. The Saturday we will block off the street to raise funds, we will have tents we want to try and get things on consignment to raise funds because we need to raise the money."

The Barbq sale will be held next Friday and Saturday in front of the St Martin's De Pores Church. If you would like to assist the camp you can contact Flowers at telephone number 6-0-7-8-7-8-5.

As per tradition, the camp will be held on the St Martins Football field and will start on July 1st.
