Security Guard Killed for Gun In Cayo
posted (May 13, 2013)
For the second week in a row, there was a murder in Cayo. This time a 23 year old security guard was killed – apparently not because the thief wanted to get into the Chinese store he was robbing, but because they wanted his gun. We spoke to his mother today.

Monica Bodden reporting
The murder of 23 year old Randy Casey happened here in front of Kenny's Store on Flamingo Avenue in San Ignacio Town. When police arrived on the scene around 7:50 on Friday night, Casey was seen lying face up still gasping for air. He was rushed to the San Ignacio Town Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. According to police Randy Casey was on duty at the time when a man dressed in a black t-shirt, a black ¾ pants and wearing a mask over his face approached him with a gun and fired 3 shots in his direction. Casey fell and while on the ground struggling for his life, the gunman took away his point .22 pistol and the fled the scene.

"Well when we went to Cayo on Friday night, the police told us that persons went and gave statement saying that my son went into the shop to buy and when he was finished buying he was coming out and then the person just moved off from the side of the building and shot him without asking any questions."

"Was he on duty?"

Nadia Casey
"Yes he was working from 6 until 9, then after 9 he had to go to another place to work from 9 until 12 in the night."

Casey was shot three times. One of those shot caught him in his side and the other in his chest.

Nadia Casey
"When they took my older son to see him they needed someone to identify the body so when they took my son and he saw him he got a shot on the side and it lodged into the other side. Then he got another shot in his chest but the police told us that it was three shots but my son didn't see the three shots."

And while Friday night's murder played out as an execution style, it leaves behind more questions than answers for the Casey's family who says that their loved one was not a troublesome person and isn't known to have any enemies.

Nadia Casey
"Well right now they are trying to cope with it because someone has to be there for somebody because this is the second one. My dad just died about a month ago so we haven't really gotten over that yet and now we have another one. Like I said - my son is someone that doesn't give trouble to anybody. Instead of making trouble he makes friends so the entire village of Camalote is grieving because when they visit our house everybody is in tears because they can't believe it."

This evening, police recovered the security guard's stolen weapon and continue to work on the case. Randy Casey leaves behind his six month old daughter. Over the weekend police had detained one man as a suspect for Casey's murder but he was released late this afternoon.

The family of the deceased is incensed that police transported their loved one to the Belize City morgue in the back of a pickup with only a sheet pulled over him.
