Two Summer Camps Bring Neighborhoods Together
posted (July 12, 2013)
Former football player Deon Flowers has been organizing his Third World summer camp for 13 years now for the neighborhood kids living around the Third World Field.

It started 2 weeks ago, and he's been just bearly able to keep the program running. At the same time, Edon "Yellow" Rowley has also been holding his own Football summer camp, which ended today at the ITVET.

Well, both camp directors decided to organize a neighborhood bonding sporting tournament, and 7News stopped by today.

Here's what each organizer told us:

Deon Flowers - Camp Organizer
"We are running it for a month so far - we feed them, we give them everything, look at the table if you see we give them snacks also just like if they are at home. We're begging for more support right now, we're fighting it because we don't want to give up - it's for a month. If it was for two weeks the camp would be finishing now but the kids want to go more, they want it for two months and I just want to finish this month. Right now we have two more weeks to balance off, right now it's to raise funds for them to get here - it's a good work we're doing but I'm always on the news for support. Thanks for the support but it's not enough, we need more because its over 100 kids and we have a lot of things going on."

Daniel Ortiz
"How many kids do you have out here today?"

Deon Flowers
"Well I'll be honest with you, today I have 110 kids in our bus and the ones that came on their own - we didn't add that."

Daniel Ortiz
"Now, what kind of activities you have for the kids and are they out here just half day or the entire day?"

Deon Flowers
"We have them all day, we just play games against 'Yellow' camp and keep the kids active and get them to play against others and to form that relationship and friendship and to know that we are all brothers and sisters and we just want the whole public to know."

Edon "Yellow" Rowley - Camp Organizer
"Actually I've been doing this for a long time with 'three star' and I used to do it out in San Pedro and now I'm back in the city doing it."

Daniel Ortiz
"When did the camp start and when will it finish?"

Edon "Yellow" Rowley
"We started July 1st up to today July 12th."

Daniel Ortiz
"How has it been going so far?"

Edon "Yellow" Rowley
"At this point of time I can't complain, from start to finish it went good - thanks to the Grace of the Almighty."

Daniel Ortiz
"Your camp is strictly a football camp?"

Edon "Yellow" Rowley
"Strictly a grassroot footabll camp"

Daniel Ortiz
"Tell us more about the activities you're doing, you're training the kids, you're dealin with what age range?"

Edon "Yellow" Rowley
"The age range of the kids is from 5 - 16 both male and female. What we had incorporated in it, is lifeskills but unfortunately the days that we had planned for lifeskills it was rained out and we didn't get the person to come to do that certain part of that lifeskills. We broke it down to where we have skills training and we also promote physical education in it as well."

The Third World Camp continues for the next 2 weeks, and he's asking members of the public to assist him. He can be found every day at the Third World Field behind the Saint Martin De Porres Primary School.
