A Camp For Young Footballers
posted (July 24, 2013)
And, as our closing story tonight, we take you to another one of those football camps. This one primarily sponsored by SMART is hosted at the ITVET compound in Belize City and has over 150 children participating. It is led by football legends and coaches – and we stopped in today where we found the camp organizers in a beautiful struggle pushing the beautiful game:..

Anthony Bernard - Football Coach (FC Belize)
"We told ourselves that we want to start from here with the kids, starting here is what we need to bring out in them. Same basic work - kick, pass, position and move with the ball - we have basic skills that we teach ourselves on a daily basis, kick, pass, buck."

Dion Cacho - Promising Young Footballer
"I play center mid-field and the person that I look up to is my neighbor Avan Crawford."

Jules Vasquez
"What do you best when you're playing?"

Dion Cacho
"Well, I score."

Jules Vasquez
"How much have you ever scored in a game?"

Dion Cacho
"Three"

Jovaunn Ramos - Promising young Footballer
"I learned to play football because of my godfather and then I look up to him too because he is my specialty."

Jules Vasquez
"What is the best game you've ever had?"

Jovaunn Ramos
"Well the best game I've ever had was in Kids camp in Belmopan against Real Madrid - it was a tough match because I barely scored."

Jules Vasquez
"So what made it a good game?"

Jovaunn Ramos
"Because my competition was so nice and had good sportsmanship."

Anthony Bernard
"It's very kind of tight for us Jules because the kids come everyday in abundance and we as the coaches have to really put a hold to it because the kids come and they don't want to be anywhere but here. We as family we have to try and support and give them as much as we could but like I said it's very tough for us from the business community. We would want it until the end of the month but we can't due to the sponsor in the business community - very poor. We will never sit down and say we are done - we will fight even if they have to get half of an orange or whatever it is but they are going to stay here with us."…

If you want to help the camp you can call 627-4041, or 601-5883. If they don't get help to continue, they'll have no choice but to close the camp this Friday.
