Nearly Ran Over A Cop, Businessman Gets A Year In Jail
posted (August 20, 2013)
50 year-old Orange Walk businessman David Carrillo is spending the first night of 1 year prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to intentionally trying to run over a police officer.

According to police Constable Yann Chin, he was manning a police checkpoint in Hattieville last night just after 9:30 when a white vehicle approached.

PC Chinn said that instead of stopping the vehicle, the driver cut into another lane and ran through the checkpoint, forcing him to jump out of the way at the last minute to avoid getting hit.

Police chased down the vehicle, detained Carrillo who was driving, and they charged him with aggravated assault.

He was arraigned today before Magistrate Dale Cayetano, where he pleaded guilty explaining that when he was approaching the checkpoint, his mind went blank. According to him, when he realized what was happening, he was about to hit a vehicle in front of him, so he had to swerve to avoid hitting it. He told the court that it was not his intention to try to run over the officer.

Because of the seriousness of the offence, Magistrate Cayetano sentenced him to 1 year in prison.
