And while he will spend 1 year, 41 year-old Niccanor Fermin will spend a total of 18 years in prison. That's the sentence which Justice Troadio Gonzalez handed him on Friday.
Viewers may remember that Fermin was convicted by a jury of 6 count of carnal knowledge 3 weeks ago where he sexually abused a 9 year-old female over a span of 5 years with the threat of withholding money for school fees if she reported him.
Fermin was allowed to present a mitigation plea in which he called 5 of his relatives to testify on his behalf, begging for leniency because he is a father of 3.
After hearing the mitigation pleas, Justice Gonzalez told him, quote,
"These are things you should have considered before allowing the devil to tempt you." End quote.
Justice Gonzalez sentenced him to 18 years for the first 2 counts, and 7 years for the other 4 counts. That's a total of 64 years in prison, but because all the sentences will run concurrently, he will only spend 18 years.
