Knocked down and helpless
posted (October 13, 2004)

Last week Tuesday, 51 year old Georgina Moreira was riding home from the Conch Shell Bay fish market when she was run over by a car. At the time, the driver, a Belize city woman, promised to help her with her medical expenses. Things started off well enough when the driver paid for a cat scan. But 8 days and hundreds of dollars in medical expenses later, the woman seems to have disappeared. Compounding the matter is the fact that there has been no official police report made as the Moreira's family says there seems to be some foot dragging on the part of the police. We spoke to Moreira's daughter who is desperate for her mother to get the assistance she deserves:

Ofelia Reyes – Daughter of victim
"The situation that my mom is in is that she has a lot of expenses, hospital bills after the lady knocked her down and the lady is not coming up with any help. My mom is a hard working woman. We have hospital bills we have medicine bills and my mom's livelihood is to sell bread and bun. She makes her Panades to sell. She makes her Hudut at home. She does not depend on anybody."

"My mom is a single woman and she needs help. We just can't leave it like that. We can't leave it like that. We need a lot of help because my mom is in a serious condition right now. We were not pressing charges because she said that she would have helped with all the expenses but I don't see any kind of help up to now."

Moreira says she has started suffering with double vision as a result of her injuries.
