“Fawda” Henry Protests Against Albert St Bus Ban
posted (September 13, 2013)
For the last 2 nights, 7News has been telling you about the decision by the City Council to ban all city buses from Albert Street, Belize City's main street. We also showed you our sample of the reaction from the commuting public which is very much against the decision.

Well, pan-activist Phillip "Fawda" Henry is joining in the chorus of dissent. This morning, he staged a one-man protest at the new location where the buses are being directed to pick up passengers on Regent Street West.

Fawda has been criticized for agitating against social issues which may be outside of his expertise, but this morning, he pulled out his "Employee of the Year" Certificate which he received as a traffic officer back in 2010, to add weight to his criticism of the decision.

Here's what he told us about why he decided to voice his concern:

Phillip "Fawda" Henry - Protesting City Bus Decision
"I am out here next to Mike's Club. This is place that sells alcohol. People come here and have their joy time. Alifah Elrington has placed the busses into this location which is ridiculous. I don't know what kind of counselor she is. The busses are coming into this location. Children lives are in danger. In this vicinity a couple years ago there was lots of robbery that was going on in this area. You have lots of shooting that was going here. You have people lives at stake in this area."

"I saw so many people came with their grocery bags; crowded out here. There isn't even a bus shed in this vicinity. This is sick on the Belize City Council. The "do the right thing" pedestrian crossing program is a safety program pertaining to all children within this country and it's not working for our program with the Belize City Council for the fact that Alifah Elrington and the Mayor - he has to place these busses back into the city. The city have a bus shed and this must go back into the city for the fact that there are children lives at stake here."

"There is a traffic officer posted out here, but he knows the rules and the laws of regulation and safety. There were two busses that come here loaded with school children. There was so many boys out here smoking their little joints and stuff in this vicinity."

"As an experience officer in 2010 when I started this "do the right thing" pedestrian crossing - you can see that I was an officer of the year. I am not out here talking nonsense."

According to Henry, the best route for the buses to take is that behind the courthouse on Southern Foreshore, where the commuters can access already established bus stop on that street.
