The Weakest Customs Scam (Possibly) Ever
posted (October 24, 2013)
People try to run all kinds of hustles through the Customs Department, some ingenious, some just average. But the one we're reporting on tonight seems just plain dumb. After three weeks of investigation, the Customs Department today called in CIB to arrest a female cashier who had allegedly been fleecing the department. So far it looks like only a few thousand dollars are missing, but it's how she did it that's the news. The female officer, who has been with customs for 7 years was recently transferred to the cashier section. In August, customs noted that they had been getting an unusual number of blank cheques. That was odd enough, but what sent the red flags all the way up was that the companies never did business with customs. When they investigated, they concluded that this female cashier had been taking cash from the customs receipts, and then reimbursing the money with bogus cheques so that her books would balance out at the end of the day. The cheques? Those apparently came from her brother - who's accusing her of stealing his company's checkbook.

Customs found that only about five thousand dollars was misappropriated. Tonight she remains in police custody at the Queen Street Station pending charges.
