How You Can Help Jevaun
posted (October 24, 2013)
A week ago, we told you about 9 year-old Jevaun Freeman, who is suffering from a rare disease which causes him to bleed through his pores.

His mother gave an impassioned plea to the public to help her raise funds to afford the treatment he needs, and her workplace has answered her call.

Tiffarah Young Castillo, Jevaun's mother, works for the NICH's Institute of Creative Arts, and in an effort to assist her raise $12,000 needed for the medication, they are holding a turkey dinner sale.

Today, 7News spoke to NICH's Communications Officer, Shari Williams, who explained why they want you to support by purchasing one of the turkey dinners:

Shari Williams, Comminications Officer - NICH
"Jevaun Freeman who is the son of Tiffarah Castillo, she is a security officer here at the Institute of Creative Arts, a NICH employee. We've been trying; our staff along with our President Mrs. Diane Haylock has been thinking of ways how to support this mother during her time of intense pressure. We could only imagine what she must be going through and so we've decided through numerous thought processes to endorse a fund raiser on her son's behalf. We are looking at having a turkey dinner sale next week Friday November 1st. It's going to be a huge undertaking as we are trying to push 600 plates of delicious turkey dinner."

"We are soliciting the assistance of some well-known Belizean chefs and it will come along with a beverage and so we are hoping that Belizeans will open their hearts and their pockets and assist this mother in trying to save her son's life."

"Jevaun has been released from the KHMH. What happen was that he needed medication that costs somewhere around $12,000. A specialist who was coming into the country graciously bought the medication that the child needed out of his pocket through the Friends of Pediatrics and so the person was only in Belize for a couple days. They administered the medication that the child needed, but now there is this huge bill that needs to be paid back."

"We want to be in the good books of these people because they come every year and they assists hundreds of Belizeans and so we need to try to help Tiffarah to try to pay back this money to this person."

As noted in the interview, the dinner sale is scheduled for next week Friday, November 1. It costs $10 and comes with a beverage, and the NICH staff is even willing to deliver the food. All proceeds go directly to Friends For Pediatrics. You can contact NICH at 227-2110, or visit their facebook page to make orders.
