High School Celebrates Drug Freedom
posted (October 24, 2013)
Today, the students of Gwen Lizarraga took to the streets to celebrate Drug Week. Now, with the pervasive presence of marijuana, we know that staying drug free means more than just marching through the streets. We asked the principal how they balance out positive messaging against negative social influences:...

Dr. Lorna Mckay
"We are celebrating Drug Week and this is one of our parades that we usually have every year. Our students made banners depicting how they feel about Drug Week."

Geovanni Brackett, reporter
"What are some of the challenges you find in terms of talking to young people who are now using more drugs at a younger age and how do you see since Drug Week has been implemented, have you seen a change?"

Dr. Lorna Mckay
"There has been an increased in the awareness of students not using drugs. We do a lot of awareness at our school. We have a counseling department that makes sure that the students know the causes and effects of drugs are because most of our students come from the south side of Belize City - we have a very challenging time,. but our students understand and they are doing very well so far as the use of drugs. We use to find a lot and now we are not finding close to any on our compound."
