Customs Cashier To Court, Almost Gets Remanded
posted (October 25, 2013)
LAST NIGHT, WE told you about the Customs cashier who allegedly ran a scam with Customs money. Well, police say that the officer is Ashley Smith, and she was taken to court today on charges of theft.

As we told you, Smith was recently transferred to the cashier's section after being employed with Customs for 7 years. Sometime between August 30 and September 26, she allegedly stole $4,966 from the government purse. Police say that she did it by taking cash from customs receipts and then reimbursing the missing money with bogus checks so that the books would balance out at the end of the day. As we told you, the checks allegedly came from her brother's company's check book, which he claims was stolen.

Late this evening, she was arraigned in Magistrate's Court on the charge of theft, and she was granted bail of $10,000. A few minutes before the closure of the clerk's section - which would have forced Smith to be remanded for the weekend - her family and friends arranged for a bail bondsman to cover the amount, and she was released. She did her best to dodge the media, where she dove into a car which drove off immediately.

She must return to court on December 8 for her next adjournment.
