posted (October 25, 2013)
On Wednesday, we showed you the fence-mending meeting UDP Public Accounts Committee member John Saldivar held with the churches. Well this afternoon at ITVET, he held a follow up session with a broader group including the Chamber, the Union, the Evangelical Association and the Council of Churches. SAldivar is trying to bring them all around to a suitable compromise after they criticized the UDP version of the PAC, calling it a charade. This evening Saldivar spoke said the mood of the meeting was cordial and he said he presented them with a proposal for the way forward:...

Hon. John Saldivar, Minister of Police
"We went over the proposal that was arrived at - at the meeting on Wednesday with the Council of Churches. We made that proposal to the other three social partners, discussed it, aired it out and they have asked for a few days to consider it."

"Is there a clear road map on the way ahead?"

Hon. John Saldivar, Minister of Polices
"I believe so. I believe that the chamber and the unions have promised to get back to us by Wednesday of next week, as to whether they are comfortable or not, with the proposal that has come out of the meeting with the Council of Churches. After that then well decide on a way forward."

"Will the government compromise on the present structure of PAC?"

Hon. John Saldivar, Minister of Police
"Like I said, the details will be made public whenever we have arrived at a compromise or an agreement with all parties involved, and if we can't then the government will announce what its' position is with respect to the proposal from the Council of Churches."

"Thank you. sir."

So, to repeat, the social partners are expected to respond to the proposal by next week Wednesday. They have agreed that in the interim their members will attend next week's PAC meetings under the present structure.
