Courtney Goes International
posted (October 25, 2013)
4 weeks ago, 7News showed you Courtney Gillett and Cindy Burgos, Belizean violinists who were invited to participate in a 2 week residency of the Central American Youth Orchestra, which was held in Panama.

Well, part of that experience was that a camera crew from an international press organization followed the members of the orchestra around as they did their normal practice routines. When they returned to their countries, this crew followed some of the members where they would observe how these musicians operate at home.

As such, the crew is in Belize, and they're featuring Courtney Gillett as the representative, while they are here. The crew did an extended interview with Gillett, and afterwards, 7News spoke with her about the experience of having the cameras here to feature the Belizean talent in classical music. Here's what she told us:

Courtney Gillett
< i>"It's a documentary that they had started while we were in Panama for the Central American Youth Orchestra and they are just featuring some of the musicians who took part in that orchestra. They traveled by bus to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Salvador, and so on. They have been following us around, trying to see what we do here in our own country, how we make our own folk music. They're in Boom today trying to see what remnants of folk music is left in the village after so many years."

Daniel Ortiz
"Was it strange to have cameras following you around?"

Courtney Gillett
"Yes its very strange, in particularly when we got on the bus the cameras were out and the people behind me were saying "what are they doing with the cameras? Am I going to show up on some website, some internet place?" I said no, it's quite fine but it's a bit weird. Next year get some more Belizeans in there. In March the Central American Youth Orchestra is starting up again in Nicaragua this time, so encourage the other Belizean instrumentalist to start practicing and join them for that residency in Nicaragua and also the tour so that others may have this experience."

Gillett hopes that there will be other classical musicians who will be invited to the Youth Orchestra of the Americas, and the Central American Youth Orchestra.
