Bagasse, it's the byproduct of sugar cane production which BSI uses in its subsidiary BELCOGEN to generate electricity which it sells to BEL. It's a waste product, but it's also a value added product - and now, there's trouble brewing in the Cane industry because the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association want to share in the earnings from Bagasse.
Today at a stakeholder's engagement conference in Orange Walk, President of the Cane Farmers Association Alfredo Ortega accused BSI and its parent company ASR of assuring their own future at the expense of cane farmers as they negotiated a new bagasse commercial agreement for themselves. HE announced that the Cane Farmers Association would be withdrawing from the event and they walked out after his speech.
