Mexican Acquitted of Guns + Firearm, but Still Stuck In Belize
posted (November 12, 2013)
In May of this year, 7News told you about 32 year-old Belizean George Valencia, and 25 year-old Mexican Juan Alliesto Hernandez Zuniga, who police say were allegedly caught in Corozal town with firearms and ammunition. Well, both men have been acquitted by the Magistrate's Court; the Belizean has been released from custody, but the Mexican remains detained by the authorities.

As we told you, on May 12, police chased a black pickup truck in the Dominguez layour area. Valencia was the driver, and Zuniga and another man - believed to be Mexican were also passengers in the vehicle. According to the officers, they saw the men throwing objects away, and when they finally intercepted the vehicle, the other man escaped.

Police detained the men and escorted them to the items, which were discovered to be 9mm Beretta pistol, loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition; 2 additional magazines, each containing 15 live rounds of ammunition, a black ski mask, a 9 mm Browning pistol, and a magazine containing 13 live rounds of ammunition.

As a result, both men were charged with multiple firearm and ammunition charges, and they stood trial before Magistrate Hamilton in Corozal. After the prosecution presented all the evidence they had against the men, their attorney, Arthur Saldivar, made a no-case submission. The reasoning was that the officers who gave testimony could not establish a connection between the items and the accused since they weren't found directly on their persons.

After careful consideration, Magistrate Hamilton acquitted the men of all charges, and police released Valencia. They continue to hold Zuniga, on the premise that they need to check with Interpol to see if he is not wanted in any other state. Saldivar fears that the authorities will bring immigration charges against his client.

He told us this evening that it is unjust what Corozal Police are doing because they should have check with Interpol and prepared those immigration charges months ago. Nevertheless, he believes that he will be able to get his client released finally.
