Firsts’ Babies Are All Girls
posted (January 2, 2014)
Every new baby is special, but the first baby of the New Year, has a special symbolism. And that's because he or she was born at the right time, right when everyone is turning a new leaf. The first baby is also a mini media sensation - he or she gets as many cameras as the Prime Minister during a scandal, and the best part is he or she has no clue what the fuss is all about.

This year, the first three babies are all girls! And the first, Alice was born at 6:20 am to 20 year old mother from Scotland Half Moon Jasmine Martinez. I visited her today:..

Monica Bodden reporting
After 3 hours of labour pain, Jasmine Martinez gave birth to her beautiful 6 pound baby girl Alice Lodge. The infant was born at approximately 6am on New Year's Day.

Jasmine Martinez, mother of first-born for 2014
"I am really happy because its New Year's and it's a gift and that is a blessing. I have to thank God for that and I am excited about it."

Monica Bodden
"Were you guys expecting baby Alice on New Year's Day or was that a surprise?"

Jasmine Martinez, mother of first-born for 2014
"It was a surprise."

Monica Bodden
"What was the actual due date for the baby?"

Jasmine Martinez, mother of first-born for 2014
"They gave me two dates; December 15th and January 7th."

And a part of the New Year's baby tradition, a food hamper was presented to Martinez by Sales Manager for San Cas Limited, Aisha Rudon.

Aisha Rudon - Sales Manager, San Cas Limited
"Of course today we continue our tradition being a good corporate citizen of course and we've given mommy and baby a case of Huggies Activ Sec diaper, wipes, Seven Seas for revitalization and of course Ovaltine to help her with her breast milk."

"I am proud to say that we've done this countrywide, so if you had a baby in Corozal, you had a package. In Orange Walk, Dangriga and we want to extend the same thing to PG. If there is a baby in PG that was born for the New Year, we want to give that baby his/her package. We'd like for them to get in contact with me at San Cas and we will get the package to that baby."

Monica Bodden
"So, every New Year baby gets a package?"

Aisha Rudon - Sales Manager, San Cas Limited
"Definitely and we also want to extend the same to San Pedro. We have people countrywide and if they didn't get it today, for sure we are going to ensure that they are going to receive their package."

Monica Bodden
"Why do you guys continue with such a tradition?"

Aisha Rudon - Sales Manager, San Cas Limited
"Like I said, this is something that been done before my time and I want to continue it and it is just giving back to our customers that's being patronizing us for over the 8 decades we've been in business and also just continue the good tidings as a great corporate citizen."

Jasmine Martinez, mother of first-born for 2014
"It's really helpful and we thank all of them for it."

The first baby was followed at 10:00 am, by another girl, six pounds born to a 16 year old mother from Belize City, and at 9:39 pm, 22 year old Judith Middleton gave birth to her 7 pound 10oz daughter.

The KHMH saw a total of 1,789 births for 2013, 813 of those were via C-Section and 798 as normal deliveries. The number of births for December alone was 178.
