Health Ministry Still Vigilant About H1N1
posted (January 16, 2014)
Last night we told you about Belize's first h1n1 death, Shahera Bodden, the 29 year old mother of a 12 year old daughter. Her death has puzzled and worried health officials because she was a healthy female with no underlying illnesses. Yet when she was taken to the KHMH emergency room on January 2, 2014, she was in very dire condition. She had to be admitted to the intensive care unit and within four days she was dead.

And that's why there are concerns for a 14 year old buy who's now in the intensive care unit. New information is that he has tested NEGATIVE for influenza, but he still has respiratory distress and kidney failure. He is an induced coma, and the good news tonight is that Doctors report he is doing a bit better. They stress that he's not off the hook yet, but with dialysis he is improving slowly and the prognosis appears slightly more positive tonight. We'll keep following it.

But the h1n1 vigilance remains in effect, especially in what public health authorities say has been a very active flu season. Yesterday at a press conference they told us what are signs you should look out for:..

Dr. Francis Murray
"We usually see individuals who have high temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Also the person may have severe chest pain, muscle and ache pain that may lead to prostration, meaning that the person may want to stay lying down. The person may not want to eat, the person may be vomiting. You can start initially with just the fever, the cough and cold, the dry cough, the chest pain, but if after 72 hours this becomes worsen and you may find out that you are restless, or confuse or cannot breathe, the temperatures does not go down - that you have chest pain - the cough worsens. All these are some clinical indicators that the flu is not improving and that we insist that individuals must seek medical attention as soon as possible."

Shahera's family told us yeste3rday that one of her symptoms was a very high fever which refused to break., they also told us that she was taken to the hospital in an ambulance on December 28th., after which she was sent back home. By the time she went back to the hospital, she was severely ill.

And when we come back - we'll tell you why COLA says it's willing to take it to the streets if three immigration officers who were caught up in the Citizen Kim scandal are fired.
