Leader Of The Opposition Calls For BAA Audit
posted (January 30, 2014)
And while the unions aren't satisfied with the actions against Elvin Penner, the opposition leader isn't altogether happy with what's happening with the Belize Airports Authority and its former minister of state Edmund Castro.

The Opposition's party organ, the Belize Times first broke the story of the BAA's cheques to Castro in December - and had been releasing them slowly. But when the Opposition Leader dropped the load in the House of Representatives last Wednesday, that blew the lid off the scandal and set in motion the events that led to this week's dramatic Cabinet decision to require the resignation of the entire board of directors, to terminate the general manger and to remove the portfolio from Transport to Tourism.

Today Francis Fonseca told the media, still, it's not enough:..

Hon. Francis Fonseca, Leader of the Opposition
"This latest move where the government has decided and the Cabinet has decided to move the Depart of Civil Aviation from the Ministry of Transport where it really belongs to the Ministry of Tourism is absolute foolishness. It is Castro, the Minister of State who should be removed. He should be moving the department; he should be moving the ministry of state."

"It is good that the government recognizes that action has to be taken. The board has been asked to resign, we support that. But that can't be the end of the story. There has to be a proper audit of the BAA funds. The Belizean people need to understand what took place there. How much monies were advanced to Minister Castro and for what purposes those monies were advanced, when were those funds advance and on whose authority were those funds advance. I think all of those questions need to be answered fully."
