Mexican Zurisiday Skips Bail, Predictably
posted (February 18, 2014)
Mexican Zurisaday Villasenor Mendez, the man who police say they caught with a small arsenal of weapons and drugs, has been out on bail for 8 days now, and because he didn't attend his court hearing today, there is the strong suspicion that he has skipped out of the country.

Mendez was granted a $75,000 bail on last week Monday, and he was supposed to show up to court today for a routine adjournment before Magistrate Narda Morgan, but he didn't.

The police court orderly called for him several times, but they couldn't find him, and in a strange co-incidence, none of his attorneys made an appearance in court either. It was likely that the Magistrate would have requested of them to try to explain why Mendez had skipped his adjournment date.

DPP Cheryl-Lynn Vidal stepped out after a short break in the hearing, and she contacted Arthur Saldivar, one of Mendez's 3 attorneys. He explained that he couldn't attend the hearing in Belize City today because he had a case in Belmopan, but he would make attempts to reach Mendez. The accused knew very well that he was supposed to show up in court today. Mendez was supposedly in Corozal the entire time since his release. When the DPP called Saldivar back, he said that he couldn't reach Mendez or his family at that time. All of this was relayed to the Magistrate, who issued a bench warrant for Mendez's immediate arrest. To add to the suspicions that Mendez has absconded, he had a very strict schedule that he was supposed to abide by in reporting to the Corozal Police Station. A report from the Officer Commanding Corozal Police says that since his release, Mendez has repeatedly failed to sign in.

As we've reported, Mendez is accused of being caught by police with a cache of illegal items including 7 guns, 12 magazines, 144 bullets, and an assortment of communication devices. He spent 15 months on remand - and as anyone who did that might, he has probably left for good.
