Court: Lenny Bennett Shot His Ex
posted (February 21, 2014)
About 2 hours before news time, a jury of 9 found Lenny Bennett Benguche guilty of maiming his ex-girlfriend back in January 2008, when he caused her to lose a leg.

Christina Zetina was forced to testify twice against Benguche's where he was acquitted of attempted murder, and then re-tried for maim. The charges arose from an incident that occurred around 8:30 p.m. on January 29, 2008, in which Benguche's ex-girlfriend was shot in her left leg. Because of the severity of the injury, her leg was amputated 10 days later.

She testified that she and her boyfriend were riding their bicycles on Clother Avenue in Ladyville when Benguche fired shots at them and a bullet struck her in her leg. Benguche testified and denied that he committed the offence. He said that he was at a Chinese shop on Marage Road in Ladyville when he heard gunshots and he went home.

Well, after extensive deliberations in the retrial, the jury has found Benguche guilty, agreeing with her evidence that he was the shooter. 7News spoke with Zetina after the first not-guilty verdict was handed down in Benguche's favour. Tonight, we revisit a small excerpt of that interview, where Zetina gave a reaction to the outcome in the first case:

FILE JUNE 4, 2010
Christina Zetina, Victim
"I never did nobody anything to hurt them or wish bad like this and they did me this and I still don't wish bad on them. I pray hard for them because I am sorry for them because I know they will punish down the line. I don't want anyone out there to do him anything for him to go down fast. I want him to live, I want him to live long and I want him to punish for what he did because that I know will happen."

Crown Counsel Leroy represented the prosecution. He was being assisted by Crown Counsel Killeru Awich. As we told, you this was Benguche's retrial. In June 2010 Benguche was found not guilty of 2 counts of attempted murder, and the jury in that trial was unable to reach a verdict for Maim.
