Siarsha, A Long Road To Wellness
posted (March 13, 2014)
3 year old Siarsha Alvarez is back home in Belize after three weeks in a Merida hospital. As you will recall, she's the 3 year old with the rare skin condition known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

As we told you on Tuesday, the doctors at Clinica Merida successfully brought her medical condition under control which means that her condition is normalized. But as we found out from her family today, while their short term crisis is over, a costly, long term ordeal awaits.

"The doctor will email me the rest of information to the standards of how the baby should live, but before we have to install an AC unit in the room because he said that the air conditioner kills bacteria and different things. Her lip is not healed, she still can't speak as yet, and her throat is still infected. It's a big change of life for her and the family. It's going to be a delay for her in school. Ten years is the least, they gave us 10 years - the syndrome will be in her system and the drugs will have side effects because the drug she is taking is powerful."

"How often will she get checkups?"

Simeon Alvarez Jr. - father
"For the month, I would say three times a month; one for the eye, the entire body and the skin; the dermatologist, the doctor who check the whole inside of you and the eye."

"Three checkups for the month?"

Simeon Alvarez Jr. - father
"Yes because the drugs that she is taking could damage her lungs - that we have to focus on because there are a lot of side effects - the drugs are powerful the doctor said and she is a baby. It was surprising that the baby recovered quickly they say. Adult patients would still be in the hospital."

"How is her skin right now?"

Simeon Alvarez Jr. - father
"Most of it has already peeled off and they form new, just the hand inside skin and the fingers nails needs to come off. They gave us some mask that she should put on her mouth and visit should be restricted totally - no visits. Right now having this house open us is harming her. They wanted the whole house air conditioned, but I cannot afford it, so I just have to start with the room and keep her locked up. She wants to come out, I can't get a taxi to drive her about atleast for a day or two out of the week because it will cost. She is crying right now, she wants to come out. From here to there she wants to come out, but she should not be in the sofas here, I have to get them covered with leather whereby we can Lysol it. They didn't want any Marley in the house, they want tile that you can map 3 times a day and it get clean. Marley will still hold bacteria underneath it - they don't want that."

"So, it's like a whole new lifestyle."

Simeon Alvarez Jr. - father
"Yes a whole new lifestyle. They ask me about my neighbors and I told them that I live in an environment. My neighbors normally cut their yards to time. Mosquito bites is a no, no mosquito should bite her, no kind of flies."

"When I came in yesterday, they surprised me. They said they are going to have a barbeque sale on Albert Hoy Avenue at "Bibis Car Wash," its $7 a plate for barbeque chicken. They say they are going to have a dance in the night also for her and also a car wash on Saturday."

The barbq sale and carwash is being organized by Alvarez's neighbours in Belama as a fundraiser for baby Siarsha. It will be held on Albert Hoy Street in Belama Phase 2 on Saturday during the course of the day. If you would like to assist with the sale or any donations you can contact Alvarez at telephone NUMBER 6-6-1-7-6-2-6.
