posted (March 17, 2014)
Three people were shot in Belize City last night - including a 17 year old female. It happened in the Queen Square area on North Creek around 8:30 last night where a gunman opened fire on a group. Monica Bodden found out that three were injured but the shots were so wild that two more persons could have been killed. Here's her story:..

Monica Bodden reporting
The shooting happened on this basketball court on North Creek Street just after 7 last night.

The victims -17 year old Hortense Lynch, 24 year old Justin Orellano and 18 year old Kenyon Moss were sitting on this parked car socializing when two gunmen opened fire in their neighbourhood.

Lynch was caught in her right knee, while Orellano was shot twice to his lower back and Moss to his right thigh.

The shooters were on bicycles and came from the direction of Central American Boulevard.

Hortense Lynch - Shooting Victim
"We saw like a car passed, but nobody was paying the car any mind, only one person and he said that the car looked suspicious - like a car that doesn't come around here. So they say that they will come off the basketball court leaving us three on the court; me and the two other gentlemen who got shot. After when the other guys went into the yard - we were on the basketball court and I saw when my little brother pass by, then 2 minutes after that I saw my two male friends who got shot run, but I wasn't paying them any mind, I thought they were playing chase. When I saw them run, I started to run too and then I heard gunshots. I ran into the yard and then I stopped and turned around to see who was shooting but i couldn't see, so when I turned around was then I felt like I drop on the ground but I didn't think I got shot already, so I just got up and I ran into the yard. A man who was there asks me if I got shot and then I saw the blood on my pants and that was how I know that I got shot. I started to scream out and then my friend got shot came and told me that he got shot too."

It was inside this neighbour's yard that Lynch ran for safety. With a bullet wound to her right foot, she collapsed. Her pair of white Old Navy Flip flops - sprinkled with blood, mark the spot where she fell.

"She came inside and she dropped in front of me and she told me that she got shot. I saw that she got shot in her foot and then the two guys came behind, one got shot in his back and the other in his knees. I try to help them and the other neighbor took them to the hospital."

Neighbours say they first heard one gunshot and then it followed by a barrage of gunfire.

Voice of: Neighbour
"I heard a lot of shots but I know it was more than 6. I was frightened, I don't know how many shots, but it's a lot of shots."

"There were lots of people on the court. When I was sitting there I heard the first bullet, but I wasn't paying it any mind, but then after than I heard a lot more, then people start to run all over the place like crab - sheltering behind car."

And today this neighbour considers himself lucky to be alive. These two holes seen here on his living room curtains are from the flying bullets.

The curtain drapes directly behind his sofa - and he and his wife would normally sit there to watch television.

Neither of them was inside the house at the time - but their television set was shattered by one of the bullets.

Voice of: Neighbour
"I usually sit down by the window or sometime when I have on my stereo I would stand up. But as I say I was listening to gospel music - God must have told me to go outside and soon as I went outside, about 20 minutes after when I was out there relaxing I heard the gunshots."

Monica Bodden
"You were just boasting about this big TV that you have here for so many years. How many years you had your TV for?"

Voice of: Neighbour
"I have the TV for about 7-8 years and the TV works better than the small one I have now. It was good until last night. My wife and I were just talking about and say look how lone we have this TV - every minute you see my mom or somebody else go buy a TV and we don't have to buy any TV."

Monica Bodden
"One bullet destroyed your TV."

Voice of: Neighbour
"One bullet."

No arrests have been made, but street information says that it could have been a retaliation for a shooting last month.
